Established in 1932, the Stomatology Department of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was one of the four earliest departments of its kind in China. As a national key discipline, it has been included in the 211 Project, first-class university and discipline initiative, national first-class undergraduate program, and featured higher education subject of the Ministry of Education. Our faculty includes 2 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Our team consists of 14 national level talent designated as National Outstanding Youth or Yangtze Scholar, Professor Maurizio Tonett, editor of Journal of Clinical Periodontology, a top journal in stomatology, as well as 66 doctoral advisors.
Over the past 5 years, we have undertaken 4 national key R&D projects, 1 innovation group project and 2 major scientific research projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 2 major scientific research projects of international collaboration of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. We received 2 second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and successfully commercialized 22 patents generating 15.32 million yuan.
Regarding fostering virtue through education as our fundamental mission, we have produced a large number of leading figures in stomatology with both integrity and professional competence. We took the lead in proposing and developing an innovation-oriented education model of stomatology, which won the National Level Teaching Achievement Award.
We serve as a national clinical center for oral diseases and a national stomatology medical center. Occupying the second place in the 2021 Shanghai Ranking of best disciplines in China, we have 6 international exchange and training centers including Oral Surgery Oncology and Reconstruction Training Center authorized by the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (the first of its kind in China), Cervical and Maxillofacial Oncology Training Center of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (the first of its kind outside the UK), and Orthodontics Materials Training and Examination Center (the only one of its kind in Asia).
