Equipped with a strong faculty including 4 academicians, 25 people selected by national level talent program, and 37 people chosen by young talent program, the discipline of Basic Medical Sciences of Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been included in China’s initiative to develop first-class universities and first-class disciplines (known as the Double First-class Initiative), as well as Shanghai’s local initiative to develop high-quality disciplines in its universities.

Eight cross-disciplinary research centers integrating basic medicine with clinical medicine and science and engineering have been established focusing on major research areas such as oncology, infection and immunity, cellular metabolism regulation, brain science and precision medicine. Over the past 5 years, we have undertaken 1 innovative research group project and 85 key projects sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as 13 key R & D programs and 34 research projects sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. Among the 580 papers published in major international academic journals, 6 were published in top academic journals such as Nature, Science and Cell, which showcases the constant improvement in the quality of papers produced. We have also won the Second Prize of National Award for Natural Sciences, the Second Prize of National Award for Progress in Science and Technology, as well as the First Prize of Shanghai Natural Science Award.  

Staying true to our fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education, we aim to develop excellent and innovative talent in medicine with global vision, great ambitions and leadership. Our integrated course on organ system has won us the First Prize of National Level Educational Achievements. Two teachers obtained the First Prize and the Second Prize respectively in the National Teaching Competition for Young Teachers of Institutions of Higher Education. Recognized as one of the best Basic Medicine disciplines with rapid development in China, we also rank the top in terms of scientific research based on the analysis of SciVal database.
