On January 30, a delegation led by Professor Joseph Sung, Senior Vice President of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Dean of its LKCMedicine, visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The delegation was received by Chancellor Professor Fan Xianqun and Vice Chancellor Professor Zheng Junke, as well as representatives from the Office of International Affairs, Dean’s Office, and Communication Office. Ge Tianshu, Council Chair of the Global Institute of Future Technology (GIFT) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Bao Hua, Vice Dean of GIFT, also attended the meeting.

On behalf of SJTUSM, Fan Xianqun warmly welcomed Professor Shen and his delegation on their visit. He reviewed the fruitful achievements made by the two institutions in recent years in medical education and research exchanges, noting that amid the rapid advancement of medical science and increasingly diverse health needs, strengthening strategic cooperation with leading international medical schools is an essential pathway to cultivating future medical leaders with a global vision and outstanding innovative capabilities. Fan also introduced SJTUSM’s latest progress and long-term plans in advancing the development of the New Medical Sciences, promoting medical–engineering integration, and building high-level research platforms, and expressed a strong commitment to pursuing broader and deeper pragmatic cooperation with NTU.

Joseph Sung expressed his sincere appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by SJTUSM and spoke highly of the School’s leapfrog development in recent years. He noted that NTU LKCMedicine, as a young and dynamic institution, is committed to addressing global health challenges through innovative educational models and cutting-edge scientific research. Joseph emphasized that SJTUSM’s strong capabilities and extensive experience in clinical medicine, basic research, and medical education reform are highly complementary to NTU’s leading strengths in engineering, artificial intelligence, and data science. He expressed his hope that the two sides would achieve deep synergy in the development of frontier interdisciplinary fields, the cultivation of interdisciplinary talent, and joint efforts on major research initiatives, jointly exploring new models of future-oriented medical education.

The discussions focused on developing innovative medical education systems and collaborative efforts in frontier scientific research. In terms of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral education, both sides explored the feasibility of joint programs in undergraduate clinical medicine and reached a preliminary consensus on establishing a joint Master’s program in AI for Medicine. The proposed program aims to integrate the two universities’ top-tier resources in artificial intelligence and clinical medicine to train the next generation of clinician-scientists and medical engineers capable of harnessing intelligent technologies.

To swiftly translate the consensus on talent cultivation into concrete action, Fan Xianqun, Ge Tianshu, and Joseph, on behalf of their respective institutions, jointly signed a Student Exchange Agreement. The agreement seeks to establish an institutionalized and regularized student exchange mechanism, encompassing summer research internships and clinical observerships. The signing of the agreement not only provides outstanding students from both universities with immersive international learning and research opportunities—enhancing their global competence—but also establishes a solid framework for talent development collaboration, laying a strong foundation for the implementation of subsequent educational cooperation projects.

This meeting and the signing of the cooperation agreement mark a new historic milestone in the strategic partnership between SJTUSM and NTU. It represents not only the consolidation and elevation of their previous successful collaboration, but also a forward-looking, proactive effort to jointly address profound transformations in medicine and health. Both institutions stated that, taking this meeting as a new starting point, they will establish regular high-level dialogues and working-level coordination mechanisms, systematically implement the agreements reached, and promote the early realization of cooperative projects.
