Global Oral Medicine Boost: QMUL Delegation Visits SJTUSM New Prospects for Collaboration in the Five-Year Plan

On November 19th, a delegation from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), led by Mr.Lee Wildman, Director of Global Engagement, Ms. Elvie-Jo Shergold, Director of Marketing, Student Recruitment and Widening Participation, and Ms. Olivia Bo, CEO of InterGreat Education Group, visited the Pudong Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM). Vice Chancellor Wu Zhengyi extended a warm welcome to the delegation. Both parties conducted in-depth discussions on key topics, including oral medicine cooperation, medical system experience sharing, and joint education models. Responsible officials from relevant departments at SJTUSM, including the Office of International Affairs, the Graduate School, and the School of Stomatology, also attended the meeting.

At the meeting, Mr. Wu Zhengyi extended a warm welcome to the delegation and spoke highly of Queen Mary University of London's outstanding achievements in the medical field. He noted that QMUL ranks 15th globally in Oral and Minimally Invasive Dentistry, and that its advanced teaching-research model and clinical experience are worth learning from. As a leading discipline in China, the School of Stomatology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, affiliated with the Ninth People's Hospital, has established a National Center for Stomatology with a clinical scale among the top in Asia. The formally signed "5+1" cooperative agreement for Master's programmes in Stomatology between the two parties marks the substantive launch of the Sino-foreign joint education project. The project will integrate SJTUSM's clinical strengths with QMUL's international educational resources to jointly cultivate high-level stomatological talents with a global perspective.

Mr.Wu expressed hope that, taking this visit as an opportunity, relying on advantageous resources—especially the upcoming Zhuqiao Campus of the Affiliated Ninth People's Hospital—the two institutions will jointly explore innovative joint education models, promote the alignment of educational standards, implement integrated talent training, and conduct in-depth multi-dimensional cooperation in scientific research and clinical practice.

In addition, Mr.Wu emphasized that the UK's National Health Service (NHS) offers significant advantages in general practice, primary healthcare, and tiered medical systems. He expressed expectations that through bilateral exchanges, British experience can be combined with China's healthcare realities to optimize the allocation of domestic medical resources further, advance the improvement of the tiered medical systems, give full play to the responsibility of the National Center for Stomatology, and provide new ideas for enhancing the national oral health level.

With the LDS Training Center (Overseas) as a key driver, the university aims to fully leverage its mature existing international joint education frameworks to promote all-around cooperation between the two institutions. Ms. Elvie-Jo Shergold shared innovative QMUL practices in student recruitment and widening participation, proposing that short-term exchange programmes could be launched to enhance interactions between faculty and students. Ms. Olivia Bo, CEO of InterGreat Education Group, emphasized that InterGreat will actively serve as a bridge to facilitate resource integration and transformation in medical education between Chinese and British institutions.
