On November 14, a delegation led by Professor Martin Bergö, Vice President of Karolinska Institutet, visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM). Chancellor Fan Xianqun met with the guests at the Pudong Campus and guided them on a tour of several facilities, including the Laboratory Animal Science Department and the Library. Heads of the Office of International Affairs, the Institute for Clinical Research, the Department of Laboratory Animal Science, and the Library also attended the meeting.

Chancellor Fan Xianqun extended a warm welcome to the visitors and introduced the development of SJTUSM, highlighting its significant achievements in talent development, scientific research, and international collaboration. Vice President Bergö expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and shared recent developments at Karolinska Institutet in basic medical research, clinical translation, and education, with particular emphasis on the collaborative foundation between the Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) Center of Karolinska Institutet and SJTUSM. During the meeting, the two sides engaged in active discussions on areas of mutual academic interest, including clinical research, artificial intelligence, and innovative drug development.

SJTUSM has maintained close collaboration with Karolinska Institutet and is currently the only designated partner institution in mainland China for KI’s clinical electives program. Since 2014, the two institutions have implemented a reciprocal exchange program for senior students in clinical medicine and dentistry, sending two to four students each year for 8–12 weeks of clinical clerkship. Both parties expressed hopes to further expand cooperation through this visit, exploring deeper collaboration in drug research, translational medicine, and educational exchange.
