To create a platform to broaden horizons, explore medical frontiers and stimulate innovative thinking, to make greater efforts to introduce young talents from home and abroad, and to accelerate thedevelopment of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine as an international medical talent center and innovation highland, the 5th International Young Scholars Forum of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was successfully held as part of the third Shanghai Global Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summit on September 20.
Shen Wei, Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Education and Health Work, Jiang Fan, Council Chair of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Fan Xianqun, Chancellor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, leadership members of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, high-level expert representatives in the medical school system, talent representatives and representatives of young scholars gathered in the main forum. Overseas young scholars participated online.
Secretary Shen Wei stressed in his speech that talent is a strategic resource to achieve national revitalization and gain initiative in competition, with a great deal of emphasis placed by the Party and the State. As the forerunner of reform and opening up and the pioneer of innovation and development, Shanghai with its city spirit of “inclusiveness, pursuit of excellence, open-mindedness and wisdom, generosity and modesty”, provides a favorable development environment for talents and strives to be a front-runner in talent competition and innovative development. It’sincreasingly obvious that Shanghai has become a leading city in the national talent development layout. The Party Committee of Shanghai Education and Health Work and theShanghai Municipal Education Commission always regard talents as the primary, strategic and most valuable resource to promote the reform and development of higher institutions. Since 2020, the Shanghai Higher Education Talent Pool Initiative has been implemented to guarantee the career development of the recruited talents in terms of funding, settlement, training, incentive, and housing, so that universities can become the main front of talent introduction, the main force of talent supply and the source of scientific and technological innovation in Shanghai. He acknowledged a series of measures taken by SJTUSM in education development, scientific innovation, talent training and other aspects. With its comprehensive strength ranking top in China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine will become a fertile ground for the growth and development of young talents through effective measures for their sustainable development. According to Shen Wei, the fact that the International Young Scholars Forum of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is included in the Shanghai Global Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summitreflects the great importance attached by Shanghai and the School of Medicine to talents. He hopes more talents will choose Shanghai and SJTUSM to developand innovate along with them, making greater contribution to China’s medical development.
In the main forum, Secretary Jiang Fan delivered a welcome speech on behalf of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. She said that the development history of SJTUSM is the vivid embodiment of the “all-embracing” spirit of the school.St. John’s University School of Medicine, Aurora University School of Medicine, and Tongde Medical College, with their distinctive cultures and advantages, merged together to form Shanghai Second Medical College which later becameShanghai Second Medical University. In 2005, it merged with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and grew as today’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Every merger has made it more powerful. The Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine has been actively exploring how to better serve the scholars here. First of all, the rich clinical resources of the SJTUSM provides a stage to make scientific research closer to the clinic practice. Academician Wang Zhenyi, Professor Yu He and other predecessors are role models for the young generation. Moreover, the interdisciplinary cooperation, diversified resource links and strong support between School of Medicine and other schools of Shanghai Jiao Tong University inject more vitality into scientific research of aspiring scholars. Also, through addressing key concerns such as housing and children's enrollment, SJTUSM actively gathers high-quality education resources to meet the needs of the children’s schooling for its faculty and medical staff, providing better security for young talents joining the School of Medicine. In the academic presentation session, three world-renowned scholars in the field of medicine as representatives of high-level talents introduced by SJTUSM made presentations on latest research results in their respective fields. They are Professor Maurizio Tonetti with Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Professor Zheng Songguo with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Songjiang Institute, and Professor Rodrigo Quian Quiroga with the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom.
Young talent representatives of SJTUSM - Professor Zhou Huifang from Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Professor Li Huabing from the College of Basic Medical Sciences, and Professor Yang Yu from the affiliated Renji Hospital shared stories of their experience and growth with the all-round support and facilitation from SJTUSM.
The academic exchange session, as a branch of the main forum, was held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine on the evening of September 20. Young scholars from all over the world gathered online to share their academic views and research experiences in an open and inclusive academic forum.
In addition to the main forum, the colleges and affiliated hospitals of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine actively held more than 40 sub-forums of the fifth International Young Scholars Forum, which provided a stage for young scholars with their own unique views in different research fields to display their research results and academic ideas, promoted international academic exchanges, and deepened the understanding between SJTUSM and young talents.
