On August 27th, the registration work for the 2024 undergraduate students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM) was successfully completed at Minhang campus. On the morning of that day, Wu Zhengyi, Deputy Secretary and Vice Chancellor of SJTUSM, attended the registration and warmly welcomed the new students and their parents. He also visited and comforted the volunteer service station, entered some student dormitories, and communicated with everyone cordially, expressing good wishes to the new students and sincere thanks to the volunteers. In the afternoon, Vice Chancellor Mou Shan attended the parents' meeting for the 2024 undergraduate students, giving a brief introduction to SJTUSM and interacting with each other.
In the morning, Wu Zhengyi arrived at Wenxuan Medical Building in Minhang Campus to learn about the details and progress of the new student enrollment work. He comforted the staff present and interacted with the students and parents. He emphasized that the new student orientation is the first stop of student service work, and SJTUSM adheres to the student-centered approach, allowing every new student to quickly integrate into university campus life and feel the warmth of home. At the registration site, under the guidance of teachers and volunteers, students orderly completed a series of registration procedures.
The senior students of the Student Union have specially prepared postcard, keychain, and the themed canvas bag, which are exclusive merchandise packages for new students. The new students receive the special postcard of SJTUSM and write a letter about their dreams under the inscription “Serve the Motherland, Serve the People” written by Academician Wang Zhenyi.
Afterwards, Wu Zhengyi visited various volunteer service stations outside the dormitory and sent warm regards to volunteer representatives. 78 volunteers from various grades held guidance signs to provide transportation guidance for new students and help with luggage, becoming a beautiful scenery on campus. Wu Zhengyi pointed out that as an important cradle for cultivating medical students, SJTUSM provides volunteer service which not only helps new students, but also conveys friendship through peer education and shapes the professional spirit of caring for others among medical students.
In the freshman dormitory building, Wu Zhengyi had a heart-to-heart conversation with students and parents from different provinces, majors, and ethnic minorities, carefully inquiring about their living and learning needs after enrollment. He particularly cared about the students who are in need, as well as those who participated in the school's Strength-building Camp and the freshman backbone camp. He encouraged everyone to be firm in their ideals and beliefs from the first day of enrollment, study hard, improve their skills, consciously regard the mission of serving the country and the people as the highest pursuit in life, and climb high peaks. He also encouraged colleagues to actively integrate into the collective, unite and love each other, help each other, constantly improve personal qualities in professional learning and social practice, and strive to become outstanding medical talents who are both virtuous and talented and can bear the great responsibility of national rejuvenation.
In the afternoon, the 2024 undergraduate parents' meeting of SJTUSM with the theme of "Devoted to the medical career and building a healthy China" was held grandly at Wu Weiquan Hall. Vice Chancellor Mou Shan focused on three key points in her report: "What kind of university is this? How do children grow up? What is the future of children?" First, she introduced the long history and excellent development process of SJTUSM. From multiple dimensions such as discipline development, technological innovation, talent cultivation, and medical services, she elaborated on the leading position of SJTUSM in the field of medical education at home and abroad. She pointed out that SJTUSM has always adhered to the "three-step" strategy, aiming to build a first-class medical school with Chinese characteristics, Shanghai style, and medical characteristics, and is committed to combining the advantages of comprehensive universities with the particularity of medical disciplines to create a globally competitive medical education system and cultivate outstanding medical talents with both morality and talent and innovative spirit. In order to let parents have a more intuitive understanding of the advantages and characteristics of each major, Mou Shan gave an in-depth introduction to the training programs, curriculum settings, and future development directions of each major, as well as the detailed information of 13 affiliated hospitals. Combining her rich work experience, she shared her profound understanding of medical education with parents. She pointed out that medical education is not only about imparting scientific knowledge, but also about cultivating humanistic spirit. She emphasized that patients are the best teachers, medical students should be full of love, learn to actively deal with patients and diseases, continuously accumulate practical experience from primary medical care, and strive to grow into excellent medical scientists.
The theme lecture of this parent-teacher conference has one main venue and three parallel venues, all of which are synchronized through live streaming. The whole venue is fully booked and the response is enthusiastic. After the theme lecture, presentations from various majors were held in 14 classrooms simultaneously. Professional teachers from various secondary colleges and affiliated hospitals of SJTUSM answered parents' common concerns about professional settings, course arrangements, and future career development in detail, and answered hot issues one by one. Parents expressed that through this parent-teacher conference, they have a more comprehensive and profound understanding of SJTUSM, and are full of confidence in their children's future learning and development.
In addition, SJTUSM this year has set up an online interactive channel called "Voice of New Students". Every new student can express their longing and expectations for college life on the message board. The messages from the new students show their infinite expectations and enthusiasm for the future.
