Onthe afternoon of February 16, the First Academic Committee Meeting was successfully held by the Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine at Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital. All members of the first Academic Committee of the Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine Institute and directors of the Division of Discipline Planning and the Division of Achievements Transformation of the School of Medicine attended the meeting. Fan Xianqun, Chancellor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, President of the Biomaterial and Regenerative Medicine Institute, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a speech at the meeting. Ge Junbo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Dai Kerong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, were chief members of the Academic Committee. All participants held discussions on the key research fields, future directions, development plans and charters of the Institute.

The Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine Institute, founded on October 14, 2022, organized a brainstorming session where clinicians and scientists in different fields were given the chance to exchange ideas and match demand and supply face-to-face. Joint research projects have been established to address clinical needs and resolve technical bottlenecks in relevant sectors. Clinicians define the technical difficulties and welcome cooperation with colleges & universities, research institutes, and biopharmaceutical enterprises with their respective technical strengths to settle the difficulties. Different parties share resources and work together to achieve win-win outcomes and tackle various challenges in clinical diagnosis and treatment.

During the Meeting, Wu Hao, Executive Dean of the Institute, made a systematic analysis of the work done since the founding of the Institute as well as the development plan and the problems of interest. Members of the Academic Committee shared opinions with others regarding the development trend of the Institute, mechanism and institutional innovations, and medicine-enterprise fusion. Academician Ge said that with the Chinese government fully supporting innovations, the Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine Institute provides a brand-new incubation platform for achievements in interdisciplinary innovation. The Institute’s mission and charter echo with China’s national innovation-driven strategy. The Institute should encourage innovation, achievements transformation, and mobilize the enthusiasm for research and development by improving institutional arrangements and management norm design. Academician Fan said that the Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine Institute is an important research platform in the 14thFive-Year Plan period of SJTUSM and commits to implementing the “Health China” strategy and undertaking major national scientific research tasks. The Institute should stick to the “four orientations” principle, carry forward the spirit of inclusiveness, the valuable heritage of SJTUSM, and make relentless efforts to promote China's innovation capacities in new biomaterials research and development and applications of cutting-edge medical technology. The Institute should develop materialized plan and specific talent introduction and cultivation goals. Fan hoped that the Institute can become a pool that attracts high-level talents at home and abroad by optimizing institutional innovation, so as to fuel discipline development and medical progress.
