Standing on the 70th year of development, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine celebrates its 70th birthday by maintaining the righteousness and innovation endeavor for first-class development in the future. On October 24, the 70th Anniversary Celebration of SJTUSM and Shanghai International Medical Forum were grandly held in the Shanghai International Convention Center.

During the 70th Anniversary Celebration Conference of SJTUSM, videos and letters of congratulations were received from nearly a hundred domestic and foreign universities and related institutions. The Conference demonstrated videos collections and read out the letters of congratulation sent by the leadership of the city, inspiring SJTUSM to uphold the schooling mission of "serving the motherland and the people” by taking the 70th year of foundation as a new starting point. By nailing down the schooling positioning of “world-class reputation, Chinese characteristics, Shanghai style and SJTUSM features”, the school is sure to foster more outstanding medical talents, prestigious tutors and doctors, and make more key scientific and technological innovation achievements. Thus, the school will reinforce the construction of a healthy China competent in education, science and technology, so as to make new and greater contributions to high-grade development, high-quality life, and high-efficiency governance.

Fan Xianqun, Chancellor of SJTUSM and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, lectured under the theme of “Greeting the 70th birthday by maintaining the righteousness and innovation endeavor for first-class development in the future.” He reviewed the 70 years of the glorious history of SJTUSM, showcasing the School’s long dedication to the prosperity of the country, cultivating the pillars of the times, pursuing the genuine knowledge of science, and practicing the sacred vocation of medicine. The School perseveres in realizing its original aspiration and burdening its mission. As a university located closest to the birthplace of the CPC, the red gene in the blood of SJTUSM’s faculty and students keeps inspiring them to work hard for the medical cause of the motherland.
Fan Xianqun pointed out that in 2005, SJTU merged with Shanghai Second Medical University, enabling SJTUSM to set sail and pave “a road to SJTU Medicine" as a comprehensive university to build a high-level medical school. Constantly, SJTUSM’s remarkable training system for talents with innovative capabilities in medicine has improved and explored a diversified training model of "Medicine Plus X" targeting top-notch innovative talents, so as to focus on cultivating compound talents in clinical and medical studies. Clinical medicine, oral medicine, basic medicine, and pharmacy of the school are selected disciplines for the Double First-Class Initiative. Clinical medicine ranks first in the discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education of China, as well as in the international authoritative discipline rankings such as ESI, USNEWS, and ARWU. National-level platforms including National Facility for Translational Medicine, State Key Laboratory, and the National Engineering Research Center have been established successively. The National Natural Science Foundation of China has ranked first among all medical schools in China for 13 consecutive years and has won 39 National Science and Technology Awards. There are 21 academicians and 207 national-level talents. The 12 affiliated hospitals own 4 national medical centers, 3 national clinical medical research centers, and 74 national key clinical specialties.
Fan Xianqun emphasized what General Secretary Xi Jinping had pointed out in the report of the 20th CPC National Congress. Namely, implementing the strategy of flourishing the country with science and education, the strategy of making China a talent-strong country, and the innovation-driven development strategy. Standing at a new starting point and forging ahead in a new era, SJTUSM will accelerate the construction of a new development pattern, focus on promoting high-quality development, and boost the construction of a world-class medical school with Chinese characteristics in an increasingly firm, confident, and methodical manner.
Fan Xianqun said that the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress has further inspired SJTUSM to keep up the momentum and join hands for a new chapter while maintaining the righteousness and innovation to usher into a new era and journey. SJTUSM’s faculty and students, with a global vision, will work together to build a world-class medical school and first-class medical disciplines soon, to speed up the construction of a healthy China competent in education, science and technology, and talents, and to fully build a Modern Socialist China. In this way, greater contributions will be made to comprehensively promote the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation through the Chinese path to modernization.
Speech by domestic university presidents
Jin Li, President of Fudan University, Dean of Shanghai Medical College, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences extended warm congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the establishment of SJTUSM on behalf of the counterpart medical schools. He said that SJTUSM and Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University have been encouraging each other on the road of development and have built a deep friendship by sharing destiny with the country and forging ahead with the times. Jin Li stated that at a new starting point, Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University looks forward to joining hands with SJTUSM to make new and greater contributions to China's medical education and healthcare undertakings, as well as the development of world medicine.
Wang Chenfa, President of Peking Union Medical College and Vice President of Chinese Academy of Engineering, presented a video of congratulation on the 70th anniversary of the establishment of SJTUSM, expressing his appreciation for the outstanding achievements of SJTUSM in cultural heritage, medical personnel training, and discipline development and construction. He wishes that SJTUSM achieves greater achievements at a new starting point, and looks forward to furthering cooperation and exchanges between SJTUSM and Peking Union Medical College in the future.
Qiao Jie, executive vice president of Peking University, director of the School of Medicine, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering congratulated the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the SJTUSM through video. She stated that SJTUSM has made outstanding contributions to the development of national medical education, scientific research and medical and health undertakings by consistently holding on to the schooling mission of “serving the motherland and the people”. At this new starting point, she wishes that the cooperation with the SJTUSM can be strengthened to jointly promote the development of medical education and medical and health services in China and to make greater contributions to the health of humanity.
Speech by international representatives
Peter Salovey, President of Yale University, and Peter Mathieson, Principal of the University of Edinburgh, sent congratulations in videos. Peter Salovey, President of Yale University, spoke highly of the remarkable achievements made by SJTUSM since its establishment. He mentioned that SJTUSM has cultivated a large number of distinguished leading roles and made outstanding contributions to medical education, medical health and scientific research while actively expanding international cooperation and its global influence. SJTUSM and Yale University have established a good partnership and look forward to creating extraordinary achievements together in the next 70 years. Peter Mathieson, Principal of the University of Edinburgh, said that SJTUSM is an important partner of the University of Edinburgh. He sincerely wished SJTUSM greater success in the future and that the two schools will join hands for the next 70 years.

Chen Zhu, an alumnus who graduated from the class of 1981, is currently vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Shen Xiaoming, an alumnus who graduated from the class of 1991 and now secretary of the CPC Hainan Provincial Committee, sent their best regards to their alma mater via video.
Chen Zhu recalled the wonderful and unforgettable time spent in SJTUSM. He encouraged SJTUSM's faculty and students to stand at a new historical starting point to seize the historical opportunity and take advantage of the momentum to carry forward the motto of “improving medical skills, and never slacking off”. Thus, SJTUSM’s influence will be enlarged and the construction of a world-class university and high-grade school of medicine will be promoted.
Shen Xiaoming said that the physical distance from his alma mater will not weaken his love for the School, and he misses SJTUSM more than ever. He recalled his past roles as a student, a tutor, and an administrator at SJTUSM, enabling him to witness the development and changes of SJTU from different perspectives. He also expressed his deep nostalgia and best wishes for his alma mater.

Yang Zhenbin, Secretary of the CPC SJTU Committee, welcomed the guests on behalf of SJTU. He expressed his gratitude to leaders at all levels and people from all walks of life who have cared for and supported the reform and development of SJTUSM for a long time and paid tribute to the predecessors who have made outstanding contributions to the development of SJTUSM. he also sent warm greetings to all faculties, students and medical staff of SJTUSM.
Yang Zhenbin pointed out that over the past 70 years, SJTUSM has consistently adhered to the education policy of the CPC by keeping in mind the mission and responsibility of "educating people for the CPC and fostering talents for the country". The school has cultivated a large number of high-quality, professional and innovative medical talents, yielding fruitful results of cutting-edge, innovative, original and subversive medical technology advancements. Furthermore, the school has made important contributions to the national and Shanghai medical education reform, the development of medical and health services, and scientific and technological innovation. In 2005, the Shanghai Second Medical University merged with SJTU to explore the implementation of the "SJTUSM Model" to build high-level medical schools as a comprehensive university and to accelerate the strategy of building a China strong in education, science and technology, and talents.
Yang Zhenbin emphasized that the successful holding of the 20th CPC National Congress has initiated a new journey. SJTUSM has accelerated the construction of "Double First-Class" universities. The school will firmly adhere to the goal of “world-class reputation, Chinese characteristics, Shanghai style and SJTUSM features” to forge ahead with determination and stay persistent in practicing. The school exerts itself to foster more talents with medical innovation capabilities with equal stress on integrity and ability for society and the country. The school perseveres in the schooling mission of “serving the motherland and the people” to continually enhance medical science innovation and medical service level while deepening the reform and promoting the transformation of scientific and technological results relying on the advantages of the platform.

Chen Qun pointed out that over the past 70 years, the SJTUSM has long been adhering to the spirit of “inclusiveness, pragmatism, honesty and innovation, and sincere dedication”, cultivating first-class talents, establishing first-class medical ethics, learning first-class knowledge, and creating first-class services. Today's SJTUSM has developed into a research-oriented and innovative medical school that enjoys a prestigious international reputation and integrates medicine, teaching, research and social services. The overall strength of the university remains at the top tier in domestic medical school ranking.
Chen Qun hoped that SJTUSM can further exploit and innovate, stay true to its original aspirations, seize opportunities, and forge ahead with determination while adhering to the goal of becoming a world-class medical school with Chinese characteristics. The school shall take quality improvement of education as the core task and focus on cultivating first-class medical talents, creating a first-class faculty team, forming first-class innovative achievements, and striving to build SJTUSM into an internationally renowned high-level medical school. Continuously improve scientific research and innovation capabilities, and contribute to Shanghai “Four Centers” and the construction of a scientific and technological innovation center with global influence. Always prioritize the people, the health, and the life while continuously enhancing medical services levels, so as to make new and greater contributions to the implementation of the strategy of building a healthy Shanghai and a healthy China.
Faculties and students chant Ode to SJTUSM
At the Conference site, Cao Kefan, a representative of outstanding alumni of SJTU, Qian Guanxiang, former vice president of Shanghai Second Medical University, Xia Qiang, president of the affiliated Renji Hospital, Chen Erzhen, deputy director of the affiliated Ruijin Hospital, and representatives of faculties, students and medical staff chanted Ode to SJTUSM to present it as a gift to the 70th anniversary celebration of the School. They recalled the century-old history of the medical school and shared outlook to the future development.
At the "Lighting up SJTUSM" ceremony, graduates of the medical school in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s jointly completed the jigsaw puzzle of the medical school and lighted up the blueprint for the brilliant future of SJTU. In the part of saluting the predecessors, the student representatives of the medical school handed flowers to the veteran leaders and academicians of SJTU and SJTUSM, showing gratitude to them for their contributions to the school, and inspiring generations of SJTUSM’s faculties and students to pass on the torch.
The celebration conference ended successfully in the "Oasis Holding up the Life", the song of SJTUSM performed by the student representative chorus.
Shanghai International Medical Forum
After the opening ceremony, the Shanghai International Medical Forum was held as scheduled, which was divided into 1 main forum and 5 sub-forums, presided over by Fan Xianqun, Chancellor of SJTUSM, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Chen Zhu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ba Denian, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Roger Kornberg, winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, made keynote speeches respectively.
The blueprint has been drawn, and we shall continue to keep up an endeavor.
