The Special Exhibition of "70 Memorable Moments in 70 Years" of SJTUSM and the New Book Series Launch Ceremony of SJTU Medicine was held successfully
The country takes history as a mirror, and the school enlightens its aspirations through its history. SJTUSM took the 70th anniversary celebration as an opportunity to reorganize the 126-year history of school running and the 70-year history of the school establishment, and to rebuild the History Museum of the School so that more alumni, faculties and students can understand, appreciate, and hold dear to SJTUSM. On the morning of October 22, the new History Museum of SJTUSM was officially opened.
Shi Sizhen, an outstanding alumnus of SJTUSM, former vice chairman of the Shanghai CPPCC, former chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Taiwan League, Cai Wei, deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, veteran leaders of SJTUSM, alumni representatives, the party and government leadership of SJTUSM, faculties and students, medical staff representatives attended the opening ceremony to witness this important historical moment.
The new History Museum of SJTUSM has a total floor area of 950 square meters and an exhibition area of about 620 square meters. It is a key project promoting the cultural construction of the School and one of the key tasks to give tribute to the 70th anniversary celebration. SJTUSM attaches great importance to the construction of the new History Museum of the School by setting up a special working group who have held several seminars on special topics and extensively consulted with faculties, students and retired veteran comrades. The new History Museum digs deep into historical materials, strives to genuinely restore the 70 past years of SJTUSM, narrates the history of SJTUSM education, and organizes nearly 10,000 photos of materials and more than 50,000 words of illustrations. The design of the new History Museum adheres to the concept of "cultivating people by building morality", integrates the new school spirit and the school motto into the design details, and highlights the characteristics of SJTUSM. The exhibition zone contains multiple sections to demonstrate the history and innovation spirit of SJTUSM. The multimedia interactive video system fully presents SJTUSM and its affiliated hospitals’ styles in each period in various forms such as space-time telephone booths, sound and light, etc. It also presents a relatively complete display of a series of achievements made by SJTUSM. The new History Museum of the school will become a key base for the transmission and medical education of SJTUSM. It will also inspire SJTUSM's faculties and students to jointly work hard for a distinguished future development of SJTUSM.
Fan Xianqun, Chancellor of SJTUSM, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, believes that the completion and opening of the new History Museum of the School is a key milestone in the cultural construction of SJTUSM, and is of great significance in the schooling history of SJTUSM. The new History Museum of the School objectively records the development achievements made in medical teaching, research, administration and social services, which have highlighted the outstanding contributions made by SJTUSM to the development of medical and health services in Shanghai and the whole country in different historical periods. The new History Museum represents the excellent school-running tradition and precious spiritual wealth of SJTUSM as the inexhaustible driving force for the school to exploit, innovate and continue to move forward.
Fan Xianqun announced the official opening of the new History Museum of SJTUSM. Shi Sizhen and Cai Wei, alumni representatives Wang Yifei, former president of Shanghai Second Medical University, Li Xuanhai, former secretary of the CPC Committee Shanghai Second Medical University, Fan Guanrong, former president of Shanghai Second Medical University, Zhao Peiqi, former secretary of the CPC SJTUSM Committee, Zhu Zhenggang, former Chancellor of SJTUSM, Sun Dalin, former Secretary of the CPC SJTUSM Committee, Jiang Fan, Secretary of the CPC SJTUSM Committee, Fan Xianqun, Chancellor of SJTUSM and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and alumni representatives Shi Sizhen and Cai Wei jointly cut the ribbon for the opening of the new History Museum.
Shi Sizhen, an alumnus of the class of 1961, former vice chairman of the Shanghai CPPCC, and former chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Taiwan League, donated precious historical materials to his alma mater, which reflects his deep affection for the school while enriching the collection of physical collections kept in the History Museum of SJTUSM. Jiang Fan, Secretary of the CPC SJTUSM Committee, received the donation in kind and issued a certificate of appreciation.
Shi Sizhen, as an alumni representative, mentioned in her speech that all the old and good memories flashed back to the moment she stepped into the campus where she has left for so long. The instruction by her respected professors is still impressive and vivid. She thanked the school for cultivating her in the major of Children’s Oral Medicine and empowering her to finally realize her career dream. She believes that all SJTUSM students share the same love for the school. She hopes that the opening of the new History Museum can initiate a new chapter for the future of SJTUSM.
The opening ceremony of the new History Museum was presided over by Zhao Wenhua, Deputy Secretary of the CPC SJTUSM Committee.
After the ceremony, the leaders, guests, alumni, faculties and students present visited the History Museum as the first audience. In front of the photos and illustrations, the audience was excited by the wonderful experience of traveling back in time and connecting history, presence, and future.
After the opening ceremony of the new History Museum, the alumni symposium under the theme of “keeping up the momentum and joining hands for a new chapter” was held. Some alumni working in Shanghai gathered with Jiang Fan, Secretary of CPC SJTUSM Committee, Fan Xianqun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chancellor of SJTUSM, and heads of relevant departments to discuss the development of the school, seek new opportunities for the future of the school, and celebrate the 70th anniversary of SJTUSM.

Fan Xianqun, on behalf of the party and government leadership of SJTUSM, extended a warm welcome to all alumni returning to the school. Together with the alumni, he reviewed the glorious history in the past 126 years since the foundation of SJTU and the past 70 years since the establishment of SJTUSM, and the great contributions made to the development of world medicine. He also introduced the development achievements of SJTUSM in recent years, stressing the contribution of SJTUSM students and medical staff in the battle against the pandemic in Shanghai to protect people's health. Fan also emphasized SJTUSM's response to the strategy of “Building a Healthy China” by carrying out large-scale discussions on discipline construction and building a series of high-level research platforms successively. Fan thanked all alumni fighting on the front line for their long-term care and support.
Wu Zhengyi, deputy secretary of the CPC SJTUSM Committee and vice president of SJTUSM, introduced a series of work carried out by SJTUSM to greet the 70th anniversary to the alumni attending the symposium. In addition to the construction of the new History Museum, SJTUSM unveiled the stone carvings for the school mission of "serving the motherland and the people"; published the book series of SJTU Medicine, and will hold the Shanghai International Medical Forum and more academic activities and events. Besides, there will be cultural publicity activities such as the school anniversary gala. The good news of the celebration keeps spreading among the alumni. Xie Lijuan, the former vice mayor of Shanghai and an alumnus of the 61st class of SJTUSM, made a special trip back to her alma mater to visit the campus and the History Museum.
Cai Wei, an alumnus and the deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, stated in the speech that SJTUSM has witnessed huge and successful development and changes in recent years. He pointed out that the school should compete effectively and develop soundly. By learning from the development experience of other universities, the future development of SJTUSM should learn from each other's strengths. He suggested that the school should pay attention to and continue to make better use of its unique advantages to get the best out of the existing resources.
The participating alumni also shared their thoughts freely and actively. The alumni praised the rapid development and outstanding achievements of the alma mater in line with the national strategy of "Building a Healthy China". They expressed their congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the School, and recalled their study and life at school. They were encouraged, proud and excited by the rapid development of SJTU, and willing to contribute to the development of the medical school. They wish that the university would take the 70th anniversary as a chance to continue to develop rapidly and achieve the "Double First-Class" university construction soon.
Secretary Jiang Fan summarized in the concluding speech at the symposium that the devotion-filled speeches of the alumni are touching and inspiring. To remain excellent in inheritance and development, SJTUSM should continue to maintain a strong impetus by working harder so that the development of SJTUSM can be rooted in the existing history. The support of the alumni is also essential because a better future for SJTUSM can only achieve with the contributions and efforts of all alumni.
