Tang Yaoqing was born in Shanghai in July 1944 and graduated from the Department of Naval Medicine of the Second Military Medical University in December 1966.He devoted himself to critical care medicine since the mid-1980s. In 1991 he joined the Department of Surgery in Ruijin Hospital. He established Surgical Intensive Care Unit and started to do talent cultivation. Served as department director, chief physician, master's and doctor’s tutor, he trained and led professional medical teams, and practiced the highest belief of "healing the wounded and rescuing the dying" in the medical field. To reduce the mortality rate of critically ill patients in ICU under the predicted mortality rate; The concept of critical care medicine has been applied to the diagnosis, treatment and research of acute severe pancreatitis(SAP) with his work, making it an indispensable part in the progress of the diagnosis and treatment of SAP, benefiting patients and winning many national and provincial scientific and clinical achievements awards. After years of professional development, the Department of critical Care Medicine of Ruijin Hospital was first established in China, and was awarded as "national key clinical Specialty" in 2010. As one of the orienator, he initiated the Chinese Society of Critical Care Medicine, and served as the first and second vice chairman. During his tenure, he promoted the discipline construction effectively, and critical care medicine was approved as the second-level discipline of clinical medicine, and he was awarded the "Lifetime Achievement Award".
