In the past decade, the emergence of androgen receptor (AR)-independent prostate cancer (AIPC) is witnessed as a result of the clinical use of second-generation androgen-deprivation therapy. At this stage, the tumors do not respond to any treatment modalities. Moreover, osseous metastatic disease is also common in these patients. Unfortunately, it remains unclear how prostate cancers progress from AR-sensitive to -independent state and why these cells exhibit high propensity to metastasize to bones. Dr. Chua’s long term research goals include: A) Development of novel and representative tumor models; B) Investigation of the cellular origins for AIPC and prostate cancer bone metastasis; and C) Identification of novel therapeutic strategies for lethal prostate cancer.
