On the morning of September 17, the Entrance Ceremony of the Class of 2022 of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was held in the lecture hall on the third floor of Yide Building. Jiang Fan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Medicine, Fan Xianqun, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Dean of the School of Medicine and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Jia Weiping, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and former President of the affiliated Sixth People’s Hospital, Zhao Wenhua, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Medicine, Shi Jianrong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Medicine and Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Committee, Hu Yijun, Vice Dean of the School of Medicine, Wu Zhengyi, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Medicine and Vice Dean of the School of Medicine, and Fang Yong, Vice Dean of the School of Medicine attended the ceremony and took the podium. Undergraduate and graduate students of Class of 2022 attended the ceremony in a combination of online and offline form.

     

The entrance ceremony was opened with a majestic national anthem. Fan Xianqun, vice president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, dean of the Medical School and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a speech. On behalf of the university, he congratulated and welcomed the 796 new undergraduates and 1865 postgraduates this year, and expressed sincere greetings and heartfelt thanks to the parents and teachers who have worked hard to train the students all the way. He pointed out that this year, students have gone through an extraordinary road of study under the challenge of COVID-19, and they did well in pursuing their dreams. They should not forget the original aspiration, and should grasp the opportunity to forge ahead and to study for the development of a healthy China, for the people’s health, country wealth and national prosperity.

Fan Xianqun urged the new students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine: First, they should firmly believe in the ideal and strive for a healthy China. Cherish the campus time for learning, firmly believe in the ideal of “serving the motherland and serving the people”, refine the noble character of “saving lives and helping the injured with great love”, live up to the youthfulness and develop excellent skills. The second is to inherit the spirit of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and to innovate for a healthy China. Take “choosing Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is choosing responsibility, choosing Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is choosing dedication” as the motto of the study career, and inherit the spirit of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Thirdly, we will stand at the forefront of the times and strive for a healthy China. The entrance ceremony was divided into three parts. Wu Zhengyi, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of SJTUSM and vice Chancellor of the Medical School presided one of the parts.

     

     

     

Eight representatives of new students came up to the stage to receive the holy white gown awarded by the leaders on the podium. Hu Yiqun, vice chancellor of the School of Medicine, led all Class of 2022 to recite the oath of medical students. “When I enter the sacred medical school, I solemnly swear that I will do my best to eliminate human diseases, help the health perfect, uphold the holiness and honor of medical science, save lives and help the injured, and strive for the development of medicine and health of our country and the physical and mental health of human beings for the rest of my life.” The students with white gown will inherit the mission and firmly adhere to the vow with resounding and powerful voice. The medical students expressed their determination and belief to fight for medicine for their whole life with positive spirit and high morale.

     

Liu Jieru, a new student of Clinical Medicine 4+4 major in Class 2022, spoke as a representative of new students. She recalled her journey from business to engineering to medicine, and finally embarked on the journey of medical studies after several twists and turns. She shared her reasons for choosing medicine, and was excited to finally start her medical career in the campus where the century-old history of Chinese medicine has been precipitated. She called on the students to fight for their ideals, fight for the cause of health, learn from their medical predecessors and the medical nurses who went to the front line to fight against epidemics “when the Party calls, I will respond, when the country needs, I will take the front line”, determined to strengthen the country and serve the country, and unremittingly seek to break innovation.

     

Wang Yuli, a graduate of the Class of 2022 and a representative of the Department of Vascular Surgery of Affiliated Renji Hospital, spoke as a senior. He shared his experience of following his father’s footsteps to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and suggested that freshmen should focus on learning during their undergraduate years, correct their learning attitudes, apply what they have learned to patients, integrate them, consider each point of knowledge in textbooks as a patient they will face in the future, and turn abstract theoretical knowledge into interesting practical simulations. At the same time, we should pay attention to the international medical frontier as well as the combination of work and rest, so as to better serve the people’s health and build a healthy China.

     

Jia Weiping, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and former president of the affiliated Sixth People’s Hospital, spoke as a representative of teachers. Jia Weiping shared the stories of his teachers and teachers on the way to medical education, and the warmth of the patient-physician relationship in the Sixth Hospital’s emergency department, pointing out that the value of medical education lies in “patients’ need, patients have needs” and “making happiness for patients”. Jia Weiping urged the new students to uphold their ideals and beliefs, refine their skills and techniques, concentrate on academic research to be the doctor the people need, realize their life values and be grateful, cherish their teachers, parents, classmates and everyone who has helped them.

     

Jiang Fan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Medicine, taught the first lesson of admission around four chapters, Choosing Jiao Tong University Is Choosing Responsibility, and Choosing Jiao Tong Medicine School Is Choosing Dedication”.

     

In the chapter of “Getting to know Jiao Tong Medicine School”, Jiang Fan used three maps to lead the audience to travel around Jiao Tong Medicine School and get a preliminary understanding of its geographical location, red veins and service layout; in the chapter of “Understanding Jiao Tong Medicine School”, Jiang Fan used precious old photos and touching short stories to tell the history of the merger of the three old schools, the merger of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Second Medical University. In the chapter of “Understanding Jiaotong Medical School”, Jiang Fan talked about the history of the merger of the three old universities and the merger of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Second Medical University, showing the flourishing development momentum of Jiao Tong Medical School and explaining the connotation of the college spirit of “accepting everything, seeking truth and pragmatism, keeping righteousness and innovation, and sincerely dedicating for medicine career”; in the chapter of “Perceiving Jiao Tong Medical School”, Jiang Fan pointed out that students should tighten the “main switch” of ideals and beliefs, calibrate the “compass” of thoughts and actions, and keep the “steering wheel” of core concepts, so as to be a warm medical worker and become a new medical worker with moral values and firm ideals. In the chapter of “Practicing Jiao Tong Medical Science”, Jiang Fan pointed out that from Puxi to Pudong, from Chongming to Hainan, Jiao Tong Medical Science stands at a new historical position in the seven years of its existence, and the joint efforts of every member of Jiao Tong Medical Science are needed to build a world-class medical school. Jiang Fan raised ardent expectations for the new students, hoping that they would “firmly believe in the ideal and become first-class talents; defend the medical oath and hold first-class medical ethics; practice excellent skills and do first-class studies; join the great cause of a strong country and work for a healthy China”.
