Renji Hospital, founded in 1844, is the first hospital practicing western medicine in Shanghai. Renji is ranked highest at “Grade 3 Class A” hospitals. It is a public hospital with comprehensive medical and surgical disciplines serving as a university teaching hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

Today Renji has four campuses (in Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern Shanghai) plus Shanghai Cancer Institute. As of 2021,Renji Hospital has 2750 patient beds number in four campuses. There are in total 4475 staff, among them 631 senior academics at Associate Professors and Professors levels, 146 doctoral supervisors and 177 master supervisors. There are 54 clinical departments: Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Rheumatology, Nuclear Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gynecological Oncology, Urology, Nephrology, Anesthesiology, Pain Management, Intensive Care Unit Medicine, Radiology, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Liver Surgery, Biliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Breast Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, Hematology, Geriatrics, Ultrasonography, Neurology, Endocrinology, Orthopedics Spine Surgery. There has been year on year growth in scientific research projects. The research fund in 2021 reached 271 million RMB. Renji has achieved many national awards, such as National Science and Technology Award, Chinese Medical Science Award, High Education Institution Science and Technology Progress Award, etc. Several hundred employees were awarded various talent titles, such as Chief Scientist, Yangtze River Scholar, Senior and Young Experts with Outstanding Contribution to National Health and Family Planning Commission, Leading Personnel in Shanghai Municipality. Renji has established partnerships with dozens of medical schools in more than 10 countries such as Canada, US, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, UK, Australia, Norway, Malaysia and others for academic exchanges and cooperation.
