Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, formerly known as Bethel Hospital, was established in 1920. In 1952, it was renamed Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital. In 1964, it was officially affiliated with the former Shanghai Second Medical College. In 2005, following the merger of Shanghai Second Medical University with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the hospital was renamed Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. In 2015, Shanghai Third People's Hospital was fully integrated into Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital.
The hospital has three main campuses: the Southern Campus, the Northern Campus, and the Zhuqiao Campus, along with an International Medical Service and a Research and Teaching Campus. It covers a total area of 18.53 hectares, with a total floor area of 499,000 square meters. The hospital has 64 clinical departments, 2,150 inpatient beds, and 1,000 dental chairs. As a comprehensive teaching hospital, it is renowned for its specialties in plastic and reconstructive surgery, stomatology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery. In 2024, the hospital recorded over 4.74 million outpatient and emergency visits, 160,000 inpatient admissions, and 90,000 inpatient surgeries.
The hospital has gathered a group of leading specialists, including five academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. They are Professor Zhang Disheng, an expert in plastic and reconstructive surgery; Professor Qiu Weiliu, an expert in oral and maxillofacial surgery; Professor Dai Kerong, an expert in orthopedics; Professor Zhang Zhiyuan, an expert in oral and maxillofacial-head and neck oncology; and Professor Fan Xianqun, an expert in orbital diseases and ocular tumors. Their exceptional professional expertise and academic achievements have laid a solid foundation for the hospital's development.
The hospital continuously advances its discipline development. It serves as the designated institution for the National Center for Stomatology and the National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases. The hospital boasts three national key disciplines: Clinical Stomatology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Orthopedics, with Oral Basic Medicine as a national key cultivation discipline, along with 16 national clinical key specialties. Its Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is the largest plastic surgery medical center in the world and the largest center for medical treatment, education, and research in plastic surgery in China. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has reached internationally leading levels. Various dental departments, including Endodontics, Periodontics, Oral Medicine, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Preventive Dentistry, Oral Implantology, and General Dentistry, have achieved domestic leading levels, with some reaching international advanced standards. The departments of Joint Surgery and Spine Surgery hold dominant positions nationally. Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery and Ocular Oncology treatments are at the forefront nationally, while the subspecialty of Otoneurosurgery and Skull Base Surgery has consistently ranked among the top three in China in recent years.
By the end of 2024, the hospital had 165 doctoral supervisors and 210 master's supervisors. It hosts 6 postdoctoral research stations, offering 26 doctoral programs and 35 master's programs. The hospital is home to the National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, the State Key Laboratory of Eye Health (serving as the lead unit), the National Tissue Center (Shanghai), the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Digital Medicine, the Ministry of Education Innovation Center for Basic Research on Medicine of Visual System Diseases, and 6 Shanghai Key Laboratories. In 2024, the hospital secured 234 research grants, receiving a total of 162 million yuan in funding. It also was granted 381 patents.
In terms of international exchange and cooperation, the hospital places great emphasis on global engagement, hosting numerous international academic conferences and fully leveraging its international academic influence. It has established long-term exchange and collaboration relationships with many world-renowned institutions, including the Karolinska Institute (Sweden), Johns Hopkins Hospital (USA), Assistance Publique-Hospitaux de Paris (France), Harvard School of Dental Medicine (USA), the ACTA Dental Research Institute (Netherlands), and Fukuoka Dental College (Japan), among others.
