Shanghai General Hospital, founded on March 1, 1864, is one of the earliest general hospitals in China that has a history of more than 100 years. It was renamed as Gong Ji Hospital in 1877 and accredited as a Red Cross hospital in Shanghai in 1981. In 1992, it grew to be one of the first Class A tertiary general hospitals in the nation. In 2002, it became the First People's Hospital Affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Shanghai General Hospital is a civilized model unit at both the national and municipal levels. It has been honored with multiple titles such as Top 100 Hospitals in China, Pioneering Institution in the Chinese Health System, Pioneering Institution in Spiritual Civilization Construction in China, Pioneering Institution in Medical Ethics Construction in China, Pioneering Institution in Hospital Culture Construction in China etc. and was awarded the National International Worker’s Day Medal.

Shanghai General Hospital has two campuses: the Hongkou Campus and the Songjiang Campus, taking up an area of 302,533 square meters in total. The hospital has always been a firm believer in “patient-centered care” and a fervent advocator of “generous, compassionate and undiscriminated care for mankind”. It has been providing its patients with high quality of care through high medical ethics, cutting-edge medical practice and rigorous scientific management.

Shanghai General Hospital has 4060 employees, 1820 registered beds and altogether 96 level three clinical and technological departments at two campuses combined. In 2021, it had 4.5382 million ED and outpatient visits, 133 thousand discharges and 83.3 inpatient surgeries.

The hospital now has one national clinical medical research center (National Clinical Medical Research Centre for Eye Diseases), one key discipline of the Ministry of Education, eight national key clinical specialty construction projects, multiple municipal level clinical medical centers, emergency centers, leading key disciplines, key laboratories, medical quality control centers and research institutes, etc.
