Shanghai General Hospital, founded on January 1,1864, is one of the earliest comprehensive century old hospitals in China. It was renamed Shanghai Gongji Hospital in 1877, and accredited as Shanghai Red Cross Hospital in 1981. In 1992, it became one of the first batch of Grade A tertiary general hospitals in China. In 2002, it became affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and in 2022, it was further designated as Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Affiliated Shanghai General Hospital. Currently, it holds multiple honors, including National Civilized Unit, National Model Red Cross Hospital, Shanghai Pilot Unit for High-Quality Development of Public Hospitals, Shanghai Future Smart Hospital Construction Unit, Shanghai Honorary Veterans General Hospital, Clinical Trial Center for Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Diagnostic Medical Devices, Shanghai International Medical Tourism Hospital, and Elderly-Friendly Hospital.

The hospital has two campuses in both Hongkou and Songjiang Districts, covering an area of approximately 302,533 square meters. Adhering to the patient-centered concept and advocating the mission of "benevolence and compassion, striving for excellence", the hospital provides high-quality medical services to patients with rigorous medical practices, excellent medical technology, and strict scientific management.

In 2023, the hospital was approved to establish two National Regional Medical Centers—Shanghai General Hospital Bengbu Hospital and Shanghai General Hospital Jiuquan Hospital, and one provincial-level regional medical center, Shanghai General Hospital Ningde Hospital as well.

The hospital now has 5,177 in-service staff members, 1,820 authorized beds, and 118 clinical tertiary disciplines and medical technology disciplines across the two campuses. In 2024, it recorded 4.3841 million outpatient and emergency visits, 159,300 discharges, and 101,300 inpatient surgeries. In the national performance assessment for public hospitals, the rate of Grade Four surgeries reached 31.77%, the rate of minimally invasive surgeries rose to 21.80%, and the average length of hospital stay was 5.37 days.

For over 160 years, the hospital has maintained a leading position in China's and Shanghai's healthcare systems. The hospital is home to a galaxy of renowned medical experts. In the mid-to-late 20th century, prominent specialists such as Professors Le Wenzhao, Ren Tinggui, Hu Maolian, Lin Yuanying, Zhao Dongsheng, Zhang Jingren, Cai Xiaosun, Xie Tong, Zhang Xi, Zhuang Xinliang, Tang Xiaoda, and Xiao Mingdi emerged, achieving a series of "firsts" in China's medical field, including the first liver lobectomy, the first toe transplantation for thumb reconstruction, the first acupuncture-anesthesia surgery, the development of the first domestic cardiac vector electrocardiograph, and the development of the first prototype of a domestic temporary cardiac pacemaker and so on.

Currently, the hospital boasts 1 National Clinical Research Center, 1 Key Discipline of the Ministry of Education, 9 National Key Clinical Specialty Construction Projects, 4 National-level Training Bases, 9 Shanghai Municipal Key Disciplines, and 14 national and Shanghai municipal-level research institutions. On the basis of establishing the Ophthalmology Clinical Medicine Center and Urology Clinical Medicine Center, five new clinical medical centers have been established for Orthopedics, General Surgery, Cardiovascular Diseases, Neurological Diseases, and Interventional Therapy. The hospital has intensified efforts in medical-engineering interdisciplinary research and the R&D of medical artificial intelligence, focusing on joint research in areas such as minimally invasive medical devices and technologies, medical imaging and artificial intelligence, R&D and application of new medical materials, and surgical robots. Its technology platform system includes a leading principal scientist research platform, a central biobank, and a clinical big data center.

The hospital vigorously develops characteristic technologies. It has promoted minimally invasive technologies by introducing multiple minimally invasive robotic devices to further increase the rate of minimally invasive surgeries. It has advanced interventional technologies, successfully performing China's first transcatheter mitral valve repair (MitraClip) surgery after TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) and over 100 high-difficulty aortic surgeries. It has promoted painless technologies by establishing a multidisciplinary team (MDT) working mechanism for comprehensive pain management and building a comprehensive pain management monitoring platform. In 2024, the hospital completed 70,000 painless gastroenteroscopies, 1,192 cases of painless childbirth, 2,484 cases of painless induced abortion, and 1,045 cases of painless bronchoscopy. It has advanced precision technologies, continuously carrying out testing projects such as mNGS (metagenomic next-generation sequencing) for infectious diseases and single-gene genetic disease screening. It has developed assisted reproductive technologies, including individualized ovulation induction protocols for elderly women, embryo optimization culture technology, and ultra-high-resolution intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection (IMSI). The volume of the Assisted Reproductive Center increased by approximately 40%, completing 2,000 oocyte retrieval and embryo transfer cycles within the year, with a pregnancy success rate of 53%, ranking among the top in Shanghai. In 2024, the hospital launched a total of 138 new medical technology projects.
