Shanghai Children's Hospital is the first specialized children's hospital in China, and is an upper first-class hospital integrating medical, healthcare, teaching, scientific research, and rehabilitation. It was formerly known as Shanghai Refugee Children’s Hospital founded by Chinese famous pediatrician Fu Wenshou and founder of modern children's nutrition science Su Zufei and other predecessors in 1937. The Shanghai Refugee Children’s Hospital was renamed as Shanghai Children's Hospital in 1953, and became Children’ s Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2003. In 2022, the hospital was renamed the Children's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. It is a member of Children's Medical Alliance of the Yangtze River Delta Region and a leading unit of the Western Children's Alliance of Shanghai.

With two campuses of Luding Road campus and West Beijing Road campus, the hospital had 730 open beds. Consisting of 30 clinical departments and 7 medical laboratories, the hospital is Shanghai Early Childhood Development Base, and the site of Shanghai Institute of Medical Genetics, Shanghai Children's Emergency Center, Shanghai Critical Neonatal Consultation and Rescue Center, Shanghai Neonatal Metabolic Disease Screening Center, Shanghai Children's Rehabilitation Center, and Shanghai Hearing Impairment Diagnosis and Treatment Center. It is the supporting unit of the Shanghai Neonatal Congenital Heart Disease Screening and Diagnosis Center and the designated medical institution for cochlear implant surgery in Shanghai. In 2024, the hospital had 2.68 million attendances in outpatient emergency treatment, 53,000 discharges and 20,000 surgery attendances.

The hospital now had over 1,700 employees, including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, nearly 300 employees with senior titles, 26 experts enjoying Special government allowances of the State Council, and nearly 40 participants enrolled in talent training projects of provincial and ministerial level and above.

The hospital owned a batch of high-quality national and provincial, ministerial disciplines, including 1 national key discipline (genetics), 2 national key clinical specialties (Critical Care Medicine, Key Laboratory of Medical Embryo Molecular Biology), 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Health (medical embryo molecular biology), 1 Shanghai key laboratory (embryo and reproductive engineering), 1 Shanghai engineering technology research center (Shanghai Children's Precision Medicine Big Data Engineering Technology Research Center), 1 top-priority key discipline of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission (medical genetics), 2 Shanghai key clinical specialty projects (birth defects, real-time detection), 1 important weak clinical discipline of Shanghai (clinical pharmacy)1 Shanghai key discipline of public health (Child Health Care Department), and 1 project of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine for the construction of local high level universities (Institute of Pediatric Infection, Immunity and Critical Care Medicine).

The Shanghai Institute of Medical Genetics led by famous scientist Zeng Yitao always aimed at the international frontier of the discipline in research of genetic diagnosis, gene therapy and pathogenesis of genetic diseases. The institute successively published 10 monographs as editor-in-chief, and over 700 papers, with representative papers published in international authoritative journals such as Lancet, Blood, Nature, PNAS, Am J Hum Genet, Cell Research and Haematologica, etc. Winning national major science and technology awards for 5 times, and provincial and ministerial science and technology awards for over 20 times, the research findings were rated as “Top Ten Scientific and Technological Advances in China” for three times, and were selected as “Top Ten News on Basic research in China” for three times.

As an affiliated hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, the hospital now had 23 doctoral supervisors, 37 master supervisors, and 2 standardized training bases for resident physicians in pediatrics and pediatric surgery. The hospital was among the first batch of standardized training bases for resident physicians of National Health Commission and Shanghai, among the first batch of national pilot bases for specialized training in neonatal perinatal medicine and pediatric anesthesiology, and had 16 Shanghai standardized training bases for specialist physicians in pediatric surgery, etc. The hospital was built with a medical simulation teaching center with children's characteristics, which supported skills training in clinical basic skills, first aid skills, scenario simulation medicine, basic internal medicine skills, basic surgery skills, virtual minimally invasive techniques, and virtual endoscopy. Abiding by the purpose that “Serving for Children is Happiness”, the hospital made consistent efforts to improve patients’ medical experience.
