Children's Hospital of Shanghai is an upper first-class hospital integrating medical, health care, teaching, scientific research, and rehabilitation, and is formerly known as Shanghai Refugee Children’s Hospital founded by Chinese famous pediatrician Fu Wenshou and founder of modern children's nutrition science Su Zufei and other predecessors in 1937. The Shanghai Refugee Children’s Hospital was renamed as Children's Hospital of Shanghai in 1953, becoming the first children-specific hospital in China, and became Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated Children’s Hospital in 2003.In 2022, the hospital was renamed the Children's Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine.

The hospital has two campuses on Luding Road and West Beijing Road, and is the lead unit of the Yangtze River Delta Children's Medical Alliance and the Western Shanghai Children's Consortium. The hospital has 700 approved beds and more than 1,600 employees. The hospital possesses 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 17 doctoral supervisors, 37 master's supervisors and over 200 experts with senior professional titles. There are more than 1600 employees in the hospital with 2.386 million out-patient visits in 2021, 51 thousand annual inpatients and 22 thousand in-patient surgeries.

The hospital has strong comprehensive strength in disciplines, with a total of 38 hospital-level disciplines and a number of high-quality national and provincial-level disciplines, including 1 national key discipline (Genetics), 2 national key clinical specialties (Department of Critical Care Medicine and Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology of Medical Embryos), 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Health and Shanghai (Critical Care Medicine and Medical Embryo Molecular Biology Key Experiments), 1 engineering technology research centre in Shanghai (Shanghai Children's Precision Medicine Big Data Engineering Technology Research Centre), 1 key clinical discipline of the Shanghai Health Commission (Medical Genetics), 3 key clinical specialties of Shanghai (Birth Defects Control, Immediate Detection, Clinical Pharmacy), 1 key discipline of public health in Shanghai (Department of Paediatrics) and 1 construction project of the local high-level university of Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine (Institute of Paediatric Infection, Immunity and Critical Care Medicine).

In recent years, the hospital has taken the construction of "High-quality, Humanistic and Intelligent " as its development goal. In the aspect of High-quality hospital, the hospital has distinctive characteristics of specialized treatment technology. The Critical Care Medicine team is a leader in ECMO and CRRT in China; the Nephrology Department carries out targeted treatment with biological agents and has advantages in the treatment of difficult and genetic kidney diseases. The Department of General Surgery cooperated with Huashan Hospital to form the "Huashan-Children's Liver Transplantation Team"; the Department of Endocrinology took the lead in formulating a consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine abnormalities in childhood sexual development in China. The Department of Urology performed the first pediatric urological robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery in China, filling the gap of this technology in domestic pediatric urology. The medical team formed by the Department of Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Pediatric Rehabilitation pioneered SDR surgery in the field of pediatric functional neurological rehabilitation in China, which significantly improved the lower limb walking function of children with cerebral palsy.The Department of Gastroenterology carried out FMT intestinal flora transplantation and successfully developed enterolytic fecal bacteria capsules. The Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery carries out new technologies such as laryngeal airway stenosis diagnosis and treatment, total ear reconstruction, and electronic cochlear implantation. The Department of Cardiology carries out difficult radio-frequency treatment; the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery carries out small axillary incision minimally invasive surgery for precordial treatment; the number of thoracoscopic, laparoscopic and endoscopic treatment continues to grow. In terms of humanistic hospitals, it has taken the lead in proposing and building child-friendly hospitals, which has been recognized and promoted by the National Health Care Commission. In terms of smart hospital, as the supporting unit of the Institute of Medical Information of the China Institute of Hospital Development of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the hospital took the lead in proposing and building a smart hospital based on the "5R" model, which won the first prize of the first Shanghai Hospital Management Innovation Award in 2020.

The hospital is the location of Shanghai Early Childhood Development Base, Shanghai Institute of Medical Genetics, Shanghai Children's Emergency Center, Shanghai Neonatal Screening Center, Shanghai Children Rehabilitation Center, Shanghai Diagnosis and Treatment of Hearing Impairment Center, Shanghai Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Neonatal Congenital Heart Disease, and Shanghai Cochlear Implant Surgery Designated Medical Institution.Our hospital was named as the Generic Diagnosis Department of Shanghai Medical Generics Center by Ministry of Health and has developed an integrated set of molecular diagnostic techniques for genetic diseases. It first carried out the genetic diagnosis and prenatal diagnosis of phenylketonuria, hemophilia, DMD and other rare genetic diseases in China. As one of the first experimental units to use high throughput sequencing technology in the diagnosis of genetic diseases in China, Children's Hospital of Shanghai takes the lead in the field of genetic testing for children's genetic diseases.

As the clinical teaching base of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, the hospital has set up majors for doctor and master degree and post- doctoral mobile station. It has also established close cooperation with medical institutions in the United States, Canada, Russia,

Australia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom and other countries.In the past five years, the hospital has undertaken 401 research projects, including major projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, the Shanghai Health Commission and the Shen Kang Hospital Development Center.The hospital has published 1378 high-quality scientific and technical papers, including 424 SCI papers; won more than 20 provincial, ministerial and bureau-level scientific and technical awards; led the development of 16 domestic guidelines/expert consensus; and obtained 37 patent authorizations. The Shanghai Institute of Medical Genetics, led by the famous scientist Zeng Yitao, has always aimed at the international frontier of this discipline, edited 8 monographs and published more than 500 papers, among which the representative papers were published in Lancet, PNAS, Nature, Am J Hum Genet, Blood, Cell Research, Hum Mol Genet, Human Mutation, the Development Biology and other international authoritative journals, and has won 5 national and more than 20 provincial and ministerial awards. The research results have been selected as "China's Top 10 Scientific and Technological Advances" 3 times and "China's Top Ten Basic Research News" 3 times.
