Shanghai Mental Health Center (Mental Health Center affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine) was founded in 1935, with Mercy Hospital and Shanghai Psychiatric Hospital being its predecessors. The center consists of Xuhui campus and Minhang campus. There are more than 1,100 full-time medical staff and more than 2,100 open beds

The center has strong technical force in clinical sub specialties, including general psychiatry, clinical psychology, mood disorder, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, rehabilitation center and addiction medicine. It is committed to developing and improving the clinical diagnosis and treatment of mental diseases, and is building a national psychiatric center.

The center also undertakes important functions such as WHO Collaborating Center for Research and Training in Mental Health, Shanghai Psychotherapy and Psychological Counseling Center, Shanghai Center for Mental Disease Control and Prevention, Shanghai Mental Health Research Institute, National Clinical Center for Mental Disease, and National Clinical Trial Center on Psychotropics and so on.

The center has two doctoral programs (“Psychiatry & Mental Health” and “Psychology”) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a standardized training base for psychiatric resident doctors and specialists, and is also a teaching hospital of Fudan University, Tongji University, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, East China Normal University, Shanghai Normal University, etc. It has carried out extensive academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation worldwide.
