Shanghai Mental Health Center

Founded in 1935, Shanghai Mental Health Center (hereinafter referred to as “SMHC”) was formerly known as Mercy Hospital and Shanghai Psychiatric Hospital. SMHC was funded by the philanthropist Lu Bohong and managed by a church. It was one of the largest and most well-appointed psychiatric hospitals in the Far East at that time. Over the past 90 years, SMHC, as the one and only tertiary Class A psychiatric hospital in Shanghai, has developed into the largest mental health institution in China with the most complete business types and leading disciplines, and has undertaken the tasks of medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, prevention, rehabilitation, psychological consultation/treatment and foreign academic exchange of mental health all cross the country. SMHC became the Affiliated Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in 2006, and was approved as the main hospital of National Center for Mental Disorders and the output hospital of National Regional Medical Center, and selected as the pilot unit of high-quality development of Shanghai Public Hospital in 2022. In 2023, it was approved as the National Quality Control Center for Psychiatry (under preparation). At present, SMHC consists of Xuhui Campus and Minhang Campus, covering a total area of nearly 200 mu, and houses 1,878 approved beds, wherein the total number of beds available stands at 2,141. In 2023, the number of outpatient and emergency visits reached 1.165 million.

Adhering to the development concept of “people first”, the focus of operation on public welfare, and the “patient-oriented” service tenet, SMHC takes the innovation and building of “mental health destiny community” ecology as the core, sets up three index systems for the performance evaluation of national tertiary public hospitals, and construction of National Center for Mental Disorders, and of national role model. It also lays emphasis on discipline construction, innovation, talent cultivation, refined management, services improvement and brand building, plays a leading role in the formulation of national and local mental health legislations and policies, and specialized technical codes and standards, scientific research on major clinical issues and public mental health services. Since the launch of the performance appraisal of national tertiary public hospitals in 2019, SMHC has ranked top in the comprehensive performance appraisal of national psychiatric hospitals, and has ranked among the top 100 hospitals in Fudan Chinese Hospital Ranking for 13 consecutive years.

To create a “highland” for mental health diagnosis and treatment services, a “treasured place” for scientific and technological innovation, a “holy place” for talent gathering and a “popular place” for cultural brands, SMHC will, by establishing the National Center For Mental Disorders and National Psychiatric Professional Quality Control Center, play an exemplary and leading role in seven aspects including diagnosis and treatment of difficult and critical mental diseases, key technology breakthroughs of psychiatric science, high-level medical research and achievement transformation, response to major public mental health issues, training of high-level medical talents, high-level international and domestic exchanges and cooperation, and collaborative innovation of traditional Chinese and western medicine.
