The Shanghai Key Laboratory of Embryo Original Diseases is supported by Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and The International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital of China welfare institute, which is headed by Academician Huang Hefeng The laboratory aims to explore the pathogenesis of gamete/embryo-derived diseases, and combines basic research and clinical study to promote the direct clinical application of innovative research findings. The laboratory will gear towards the national strategic need of "improving the quality of the population at birth and effectively preventing major diseases" and carry out the research in three directions, including the studies of gamete/embryonic origin of diseases, fetal origin of diseases, and genetic-based prevention and control of embryonic diseases. Based on the advanced reproductive technology and reproductive genetic technology platform in the hospital, the researchers will continuously explore the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of gamete/embryo-derived adult-onset chronic diseases induced by adverse events in early life, leading to the novel findings and the establishment of new theories. This laboratory will actively accomplish the layout of multicenter clinical research with the well-established multicenter follow-up system, and innovatively set up an early warning, prevention, and control platform for gamete/embryo-derived diseases from the beginning of life. The laboratory will also provide new guidelines for safe assisted reproduction technology, form distinctive consensus in the field of reproductive health and prevention of major diseases, leading to the development into a well-known medical research institute for embryonic-derived diseases in the world in the future. The Key Laboratory will closely focus on the fixed goals, improve the original innovation capability, support the development of strategic emerging industries, cultivate and recruit outstanding scientific/technological experts, continue the opening and sharing of all the equipments and platforms, strengthen cooperation and exchange, play the leading role in the development of regionalized advantageous discipline fields.
