Prof. Fan Xianqun (male, Han nationality), born in Shouxian County, Anhui Province, is a Doctor of Medicine, professor, chief physician, and PhD supervisor. He is currently member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) Committee, vice president of SJTU, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM), Chancellor of SJTUSM, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, member of the 13th CPPCC Shanghai Committee, and a delegate to the 11th CPC Shanghai Congress.
Fan graduated from Anhui Bengbu Medical College in 1987 and got his bachelor’s degree in medicine. In 1993 and 1998, he graduated from Shanghai Second Medical University with a master's degree and a doctorate in medicine respectively. He went to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital in 2001 and the Mayo Hospital in 2005 as a visiting scholar. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) in 2015 and Fellowship Ad Hominem of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (UK) in 2019. In 2021, he was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Fan is also a Chang Jiang Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education, a fellow of the National 100/1,000/10,000 Talent Project, a Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions of the National Health Commission, a Shanghai Leading Talent and a Shanghai Excellent Academic Leader.
Prof. Fan is a renowned ophthalmologist and the academic leader of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Ninth People's Hospital affiliated with SJTUSM. He has been committed to the clinical treatment of and basic research on orbital diseases and tumors. Under his leadership, his team has created key technologies such as the endoscopic navigation system for orbital surgery, which has improved the safety and efficacy of orbital surgery; and has developed new technologies of interventional chemotherapy and new treatment scheme for orbital malignant tumors, which has helped more patients save their eyes or life. Prof. Fan has been in charge of 15 national projects including those under Project 863, national key R&D programs, specialized national health projects and key programs of the National Natural Science Foundation. He has also published over 190 SCI papers as the first author or the corresponding author in journals such as Cell Stem Cell, Science Advances, Advanced Materials and Ophthalmology. He has won two second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. He is also the lecturer of “Prevention and Treatment of Eye Diseases”, one of the first “985” university premium MOOC courses under the patronage of the Ministry of Education. Prof. Fan concurrently serves as president of China Hospital Development Institute of SJTU, director of Shanghai Key Laboratory of Orbital Diseases and Tumor, director of the Institute of Ophthalmology and Vision Science of SJTUSM, chairman of the Asia-Pacific Society of Ocular Oncology and Pathology, chairman of the Orbital Tumor Specialized Committee of China Anti-cancer Association, vice president of the Ophthalmologist Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, head of the Ocular Plastic Surgery and Orbital Disease Team of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, vice president of the Shanghai Medical Association, vice president of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association, and president of the fifth Asia-Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery. He is a recipient of the Asia-Pacific Ophthalmology Outstanding Contribution Award, the Chinese Ophthalmology Outstanding Achievement Award, the Wu Jieping-Paul Janssen Medical & Pharmaceutical Award, and the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Science and Technology Progress.
Prof. Fan has rich experience of Party work on many positions, and knows well medical education and hospital management. He has served successively as deputy secretary of the CPC Committee of SJTU, secretary of the CPC Committee of SJTUSM, deputy secretary and secretary of the CPC Committee of Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital and president of Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital, dean of the Clinical Medical School of Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital, and president of Shanghai Third People’s Hospital. He has been awarded National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker, National Health System Outstanding Worker, National Health System Outstanding Supervisor for Activities of Seeking Excellence, Shanghai Noble Medical Ethics Award, Shanghai Educator Award, Shanghai Health System Silver Snake Award, Special Recognition of Shanghai Health System Silver Snake Award, Shanghai Outstanding Contribution Award for Medical Development, and Shanghai Science and Technology Elite.
Fan is responsible for the overall administration of SJTUSM, mainly in charge of personnel, development planning, discipline development, scientific research and auditing.
He is also responsible for the liaison with Ruijin Hospital and Tong Ren Hospital.
