Professor Hossein Baharvand

Royan Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Technology, Tehran, Iran Professor Hossein Baharvand is an internationally acclaimed pioneer in stem cell and regenerative medicine, serving as the founder and director of Iran's prestigious Royan Institute. With an impressive academic background spanning Biology (B.Sc.,Shiraz University, 1994), Developmental Biology (M.Sc., Shahid Beheshti University, 1996), and Cell and Developmental Biology (Ph.D.,Khwarizmi University, 2004), he has spearheaded Iran's breakthrough research in embryonic stem cells (2003) and induced pluripotent stem cells (2008).

A prolific researcher, Prof. Baharvand has made seminal contributions to pluripotent stem cell differentiation into functional cells and tissue engineering. His exceptional publication record includes over 490 international papers, 4 monographs, and numerous translated textbooks, with his work featured on 8 international journal covers. His research has been cited over 33,000times (h-index78), earning him consistent recognition as a Web of Science ESI Top 1% researcher.

Prof. Baharvand's outstanding contributions have been honored with 38 prestigious awards, most notably the UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences. His scientific eminence is further recognized through his election as a TWAS Fellow (2020) and member of Iran's National Academy of Sciences (2023).

Beyond academia, he has demonstrated remarkable commitment to translational research and public engagement, establishing two spin-off companies, the innovative "Stem Cells for All" outreach program, and the Annual International Summer School to foster global collaboration in stem cell research and its clinical applications.
