Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Hainan International Medical Center Successfully Launches 2025 Research Summer Camp

On August 1, the opening ceremony of the 2025 Research Summer Camp of Hainan International Medical Center (HIMC) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, along with the fifth session of the “Bole Lecture Series,” was held in the atrium of HIMC’s first floor.

The event was attended by Fu Zhu, Deputy Director of the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone Administration; Gu Zhidong, Deputy Director of Ruijin Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine; Xin Lixue, Director of the China (Hainan) South China Sea Museum; Chen Zhe, Full-time Deputy Director of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Hainan Research Institute; Zhang Taoliang, Associate Researcher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Hainan Research Institute; Bai Yinqi, Chief Scientist at Sanya Huada Life Science Research Institute; Zhang Yaohong, Chief Expert of the World Health Organization Biobank and Director of HIMC’s International Exchange Department; head coaches of the summer camp Zhou Yun and Wang Hong; and 23 Hainan-specialized graduate students of the 2025 cohort.

Fu Zhu warmly welcomed the guests and campers, extending heartfelt congratulations on the successful launch of the summer camp. She affirmed that the Lecheng Administration would continue to support HIMC’s development, providing robust policy and service guarantees.

Ke Fei, from the Science, Education, and Talent Development Department of the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone Administration, gave a comprehensive overview of the pilot zone’s achievements and unique advantages.

Yao Yutong, a representative of the 2025 Hainan-specialized graduate students, spoke on behalf of the campers. She expressed that the summer camp offered a valuable learning opportunity, and the campers would diligently participate in courses and experiments to maximize their gains.

During the opening ceremony, Tong Tianlang, Gu Zhidong, Xin Lixue, Chen Zhe, Zhou Yun, and Wang Hong jointly activated the launch device, officially marking the start of the summer camp.

Following the ceremony, the fifth session of the “Bole Lecture Series” commenced. Gu Zhidong delivered a lecture titled Ruijin Hainan: Connecting with the World, Resonating with Global Medical Technology, showcasing Ruijin Hainan Hospital’s efforts to align with international medical frontiers.

Xin Lixue presented The Story of the Sea: Diving Six Thousand Feet into the Deep Blue Treasure, Evidence of the Maritime Silk Road, reviewing China’s underwater archaeology practices and introducing the deep-sea archaeology model and exhibition achievements based in the South China Sea. His talk provided campers with rich historical and cultural insights, fostering cultural identity and national pride.

Zhang Taoliang, in his lecture Exploring the Deep Sea: Manned Submersibles Reveal the “Normal” and “Anomalous” Seafloor, highlighted breakthroughs and discoveries by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University team in deep-sea exploration. He explained research methods used in deep-sea expeditions, showcasing the inspiring nature of scientific exploration.

Bai Yinqi, under the theme New Omics Technologies and Disease Research, discussed how advances in spatial omics technologies drive scientific research and algorithm development, illustrating their applications in disease research and encouraging campers to explore interdisciplinary frontiers.

Zhang Yaohong, in Crossing Borders: HIMC’s Internationalization Strategy, outlined HIMC’s positioning in global development, shared experiences in advancing international projects and cooperation, and envisioned expanding global perspectives.

After each lecture, representatives of the 2025 Hainan-cohort graduate students presented commemorative certificates for the “Bole Lecture Series” to the speakers.

The event was hosted by Tong Tianlang, Deputy Director of HIMC. He welcomed all guests and campers, introducing the development history of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. He noted that the “Bole Lecture Series” enriched campers’ learning perspectives, and HIMC would provide favorable conditions and support for the graduate students’ research and studies.

The month-long research summer camp focuses on immunology technology experiments. Campers will learn techniques such as immunoglobulin extraction, immunofluorescence staining, single nuclear cell isolation, and lymphocyte surface antigen detection. Through these experiments, campers will acquire foundational laboratory skills, laying a solid foundation for future scientific research.
