Recently, the inauguration ceremony of the Translational Research Center for Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was held during the “2025 Integrated Medicine · Shanghai Forum.” The event was attended by Academician Chen Xiangmei, President of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine; Ling Changquan, President of the Shanghai Association of Integrative Medicine; Wang Wenjian, Honorary President of the Shanghai Association of Integrative Medicine; Zheng Junke, Vice Chancellor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine; and Mou Shan, Vice Chancellor and Executive Deputy Director of the new research center. Nearly 200 experts, scholars, faculty members, and students from the university and its affiliated hospitals witnessed this important milestone.

In her opening remarks, Academician Chen Xiangmei congratulated theinauguration of the research center and commended Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine for its long-standing contributions to integrative medicine. She noted that SJTUSM has a long history in integrative medicine that can be dated back to the 1950s, with several generations of researchers laying a solid foundation for the development of integrated Chinese and Western medicine. She emphasized that TCM and Western medicine are both important has been recognized as a fundamental national policy. Chen expressed her hope that the new center, leveraging the interdisciplinary strengths, willtrain a new generation of young and mid-career scholars and explore innovative models to grow integrative medicine at a comprehensive university. She also expressed the expectation that the center would produce outcomes that are applicable clinically, and contribute to the nationwide advancement of integrative medicine.

Zheng Junke delivered the welcome address at the forum. He reviewed the emphasis placed by the State on traditional Chinese medicine and integrative medicine since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. He also outlined the development history and achievements of the integrative medicine discipline at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, highlighting the significance of launching the new research center. Zheng pledged full institutional support for the center, emphasizing its role in contributing to the development of traditional Chinese medicine and integrative healthcare in China.

The forum was chaired by Mou Shan.

Chen Xiangmei, Ling Changquan, Wang Wenjian, and Zheng Junke jointly unveiled the nameplate of the Translational Research Center. Zheng Junke announced the official decision on the center’s establishment as well as the appointments of the director and deputy directors. Professor Shi Jianrong, former Deputy Secretary of SJTUSM, has been appointed as the Director of the center.

Professor Shi Jianrong delivered a detailed blueprint on the center’s development. She presented the center’s background, achievements to date, and future plans, emphasizing progress in academic innovation, platform building, and talent cultivation at SJTUSM. She also outlined the center’s future goals and concrete initiatives, including research on integrated diagnosis and treatment for complex and chronic diseases, building interdisciplinary platforms, fostering collaborative research, optimizing faculty development, and nurturing innovative talent.

It is also worth noting that, in preparation for the center’s launch and aligned with the strategic planning of the 15th Five-Year Plan for discipline development, a seminar was organized on the development of the Translational Research Center for Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine in late April 2025. During the seminar, representatives from SJTUSM and its affiliated hospitals shared progress and achievements in the field. Discussions were held on four key areas: clinical application, scientific collaboration and innovation, talent development, and policy support and resource allocation. The seminar provided valuable insights and recommendations for advancing integrative medicine during the 15th Five-Year Plan period.
The inauguration of the Research Center marks a significant step forward of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in developing the integrative medicine discipline. It provides a new platform for advancing clinical and integrative medicine and contributes meaningfully to national goals in education, science and technology, talent development, and health.
