On September 26, the National Children’s Medical Center (Shanghai), Shanghai Children’s Medical Center affiliated with SJTUSM, occupying 60 acres within Shanghai International Medical Park, officially opened its Zhangjiang campus. In the future, it will collaborate with nearby institutions, such as the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Hospital, and Shanghai Cancer Hospital Pudong campus affiliated with Fudan University, to establish a national-level hub for cancer diagnosis and treatment focusing on the entire lifecycle of hematological diseases and solid tumors.

In 2017, China’s National Health Commission and Shanghai Municipal Government jointly started the National Children’s Medical Center project. Zhangjiang campus became the first national medical center project in Shanghai to be completed and put into use. The campus is located at the intersection of Tianniu Road and Hongqu Road, with a total construction area of 100,000 square meters, offering 500 beds, 8 modern operating rooms, and 32 bone marrow transplant units. It is the first specialized children’s hospital in China to set up a radiation therapy center and a cell therapy research and development center, aiming to create a highly specialized children's medical institution with a focus on the diagnosis and research of major complex pediatric diseases, particularly in hematology and oncology.

The branch has established comprehensive pediatric wards, hematology wards, oncology wards, transplant wards, hybrid operating rooms, intensive care units, and innovative research-oriented wards. It will complement and strategically develop alongside the main branch on Dongfang Road. Through collaboration with businesses and the integration of research and production, a new model of medical innovation will be developed, forming a national-level children’s healthcare system led by the National Children’s Medical Center and supported by the National Children’s Regional Medical Centers. Furthermore, it will collaborate with top-tier pharmaceutical companies, such as Shanghai Pharmaceuticals, to establish a leading center for pediatric drug innovation and medical device development.

During the opening ceremony, Shanghai Children’s Medical Center signed a formal agreement with the Institute of Hematology & Blood Diseases Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Both parties will work together to build a leading domestic and internationally advanced center for the diagnosis and treatment of complex pediatric diseases. That afternoon, the new branch held a public consultation event, where 19 experts from 14 departments answered parents' questions about the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of common pediatric diseases, benefiting the surrounding community.

In the near future, the Zhangjiang branch will continue equipment testing and conduct drills, and it is expected to officially open and start accepting patients after the National Day holiday.

Based in Shanghai and serving the entire nation, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine relies on its affiliated hospitals to support thedevelopment of five national medical centers, ten national regional medical centers, and three national clinical medical research centers, ranking among the top in the country. Its diagnostic and medical service levels are nationally leading. Through the establishment of national medical centers and regional medical centers, the institution aims to form a world-class medical demonstration base, promoting the integration, crossover, collaboration, and high-quality development of clinical specialties. This effectively enhances clinical research capabilities, the ability to translate research into practice, innovation collaboration, and social service capacity.
