On December 3, the 2024 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Award Ceremony was held in Beijing. This prestigious award, established in 1994 by patriotic Hong Kong financiers Ho Shan-heng, Liang Qiujun, Ho Tin, and Li Guowei, aims to recognize outstanding Chinese scientists who contribute to national modernization. Over the past 30 years, the award has honored exceptional scientists and has become a successful example of social-driven scientific awards in China, playing a positive role in stimulating China's scientific development and cultivating homegrown innovative talent.
The ceremony honored 56 outstanding science and technology workers for their major scientific discoveries and outstanding contributions. Among them, Academician Ning Guang, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was awarded the 2024 Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Progress Award.
Ning Guang, a Chinese Academy of Engineering academician and President of Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, as well as a distinguished professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has always considered himself an ordinary doctor. He has significant clinical experience in endocrine tumors and rare diseases and has made considerable contributions to molecular diagnosis and treatment of endocrine diseases, particularly in the study of Cushing's syndrome caused by adrenal adenomas and insulinomas caused by Menin. He has also been a leading advocate for a nationwide diabetes prevalence survey, highlighting the severity of metabolic diseases in China. The metabolic disease MMC prevention and treatment model, which he initiated, has become a new international paradigm for the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases, thanks to the active support of Wang Weiqing, the incoming chair of the Endocrinology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and other professionals. Currently, under the framework of the country's "four major chronic diseases," he is actively exploring new models and methods for "lifecycle health."
Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine has always aligned closely with national and regional strategic needs, emphasizing scientific innovation and talent cultivation. The institution actively explores new forms of organized research, maintains a high level of self-reliance and strength, and has made continuous breakthroughs in scientific research. Since the establishment of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Progress Award in 1994, a total of 13 individuals from SJTUSM have received the honor.
