On September 5th, the 28th Ophthalmology Academic Conference (CCOS 2024) opened in Wuhan. During this significant event, a monumental moment was witnessed with the release of the new book Ocular Oncology by Chinese Academy of Engineering Academician Fan Xianqun, Chancellor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
Ocular Oncology is the first comprehensive monograph on ocular tumors in China, listed under the "14th Five-Year Plan" for national key publications, and supported by the 2024 National Publishing Fund. This publication marks a new milestone for research in the field of ocular oncology in China.
At the launch, prominent figures in the field of ophthalmology, including Academicians Xie Lixin and Fan Xianqun, along with Professors Yao Ke, Wang Ningli, and Sun Xinghuai, unveiled the new book. Academician Xie Lixin extended warm congratulations on the release of the new book. He stated that ocular tumors, as a disease that seriously threatens both patients' vision and life, with consequences such as blindness, disability, and death, must not be overlooked. It remains a major challenge in the field of ophthalmology that urgently needs to be addressed. Although the field of ocular oncology in China started relatively late, significant progress has been made in recent years through the relentless efforts of many scholars. Among them, Academician Fan Xianqun is a distinguished representative and leading pioneer in China's ocular oncology field. The publication of Ocular Oncology is the culmination of over 30 years of research and experience by Academician Fan Xianqun and his team. This book not only represents high-level research achievements in China's ocular oncology field but also showcases the capabilities and expertise of Chinese scholars on the international stage. As the first comprehensive and systematic professional standard textbook on ocular tumors in China, the publication of Ocular Oncology will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the development of ophthalmology in the country. It will not only enhance the ability and level of ocular tumor diagnosis and treatment but also promote the transformation and application of more innovative diagnostic and therapeutic achievements, contributing to the advancement of ophthalmology both in China and worldwide.
In his speech, Fan Xianqun expressed gratitude for the support he has received over the years and thanked his colleagues, contributors, and publishing teams. He highlighted the five years it took to write the book and acknowledged the challenge of knowledge updating. He extended special thanks to two academic giants, Academician Xie Lixin and Academician Hao Xishan, for writing the forewords. Xie Lixin’s profound expertise in ophthalmology and Hao Xishan’s visionary insights in oncology provided invaluable guidance for the writing of the book. Fan also expressed his sincere gratitude to the People's Medical Publishing House for their strong support in the publication process and thanked the National Publishing Fund for its financial support. He acknowledged the contributions of his team members, stating that their efforts were crucial to the book's completion. He hopes the book serves as a valuable reference for both ophthalmologists and oncologists.
Ocular Oncology includes six sections and 46 chapters, covering about 150 ocular tumor diseases. It provides detailed discussions on the latest theoretical, diagnostic, and treatment advances, especially those adapted to China's medical context. The book contains over 700 images to help understanding and includes clinical case discussions. The comprehensive content is expected to make a lasting impact on the diagnosis and treatment of ocular tumors in China and worldwide.
