Recently, FAN Xianqun, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), vice president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and chancellor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was invited to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). During his visit, FAN attended the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; shared ideas with the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, CUHK and the Hong Kong Eye Hospital where he delivered a keynote speech titled Engineering Meets Ophthalmology at the CAE Academicians Lecture Series; and attended the joint annual meeting of the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society where he also delivered a keynote speech titled The Mechanism and Clinical Treatment of Malignant Tumors in the Eye at the CAE Academicians Lecture Series. Through the in-depth engagements and communications, SJTU-SM and the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK have been determined to enhance their partnership in medical education, technological innovation, and healthcare services, aiming to promote innovation and development in medical science.
At CUHK, FAN met and exchanged ideas with Prof. CHAN Kam Leung, Alan, provost of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Prof. CHIU Wai Yan, Philip, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK. FAN and CHIU signed the MOU and delivered their speeches, respectively. CHAN presided over the signing ceremony.
CHAN extended a warm welcome to FAN. He pointed out that CUHK fulfills its social responsibilities, and promotes the development of innovators, collaboration in scientific and technological innovation, and academic exchanges, all for sustainability in education and research. SJTUSM and the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK have maintained a close partnership for years, and the new MOU is expected to lay a more solid foundation for closer cooperation between them.
CHIU stressed that SJTUSM and the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK share the same concepts and ambitions in health care, discipline development, and talent cultivation. Now a consensus has been reached on cooperation in scientific research, teacher visits, and student exchanges. Looking ahead, they will continue to carry out more extensive and in-depth cooperation in such fields as medical education, talent development, and scientific research.
FAN expressed gratitude to CUHK for their warm reception. He stated that SJTU has a history of 128 years and SJTUSM 72. With its great achievements in discipline construction, talent cultivation, technological innovation, and health care, SJTU-SM today ranks among the top medical schools in China, and is currently working towards a world-class medical school and discipline. The Faculty of Medicine, CUHK is one of the top medical schools in Asia. The signing of the MOU is expected to deepen the friendship and collaboration between both schools to boost medical education and research, enhance their influence around the globe, and open a new chapter in Shanghai-Hong Kong cooperation, thus making new and greater contributions to building a Healthy China and a global community of health for all.

After the ceremony, FAN and his delegation visited the Faculty of Medicine, the Museum, and Choh-Ming Li Basic Medical Sciences Building. Accompanied by Prof. FUNG Hong, CEO, CUHKMC, they also visited the CUHK Medical Center.
During his visit to the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, CUHK and the Hong Kong Eye Hospital, FAN delivered a keynote speech at the CAE Academicians Lecture Series, titled Engineering Meets Ophthalmology, for ophthalmology teachers, doctors, and researchers, both online and offline. He pointed out in the speech that the integration of medicine and engineering represents an important hotspot and trend for technology development. SJTU-SM and the Department of Ophthalmology, Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital affiliated to it have worked together to launch innovation platforms and talent incubation programs engineered to enhance the technological innovation capabilities in medical engineering and translational medicine. They play a really important role in promoting the medical development and driving the resolution of major human diseases, by developing a number of national key scientific research projects with great achievements. At the Department of Ophthalmology they have clearly identified their development focuses, tackled the clinical challenges in orbital diseases, deeply explored the key targets of the pathogenesis, established a new model of precise and minimally invasive surgery for orbital diseases, developed medical imaging AI technology to assist in solving the pain points of clinical diagnosis and treatment, kept innovating at the medical frontiers, and driven China’s orbitopathy to go global and reach the advanced international level. At the joint annual meeting of the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society, FAN delivered a keynote speech titled The Mechanism and Clinical Treatment of Malignant Tumors in the Eye at the CAE Academicians Lecture Series session. First of all, he briefed the characteristics of malignant eye tumors and the ocular oncology development in China. Then, he presented the cutting-edge achievements of SJTUSM and the Department of Ophthalmology, Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital affiliated to it in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of eye tumors from the perspectives of the mechanism and targeted intervention of eye tumors, arterial intervention and surgical treatment, and multi-center clinical research. By revealing the mechanism of occurrence and development of malignant ocular tumors, establishing the new surgical treatment technologies and targeted therapies, conducting multi-center clinical research, and formulating the diagnosis and treatment standards and guidelines, they have significantly improved the survival rate and eye preservation rate of ocular tumor patients in China, contributing a great deal to promoting the high-quality development of the ocular oncology in our country.
