On June 20, the 2023 commencement ceremony of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was held in the Red Hall of Shanghai World Expo Center. Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine has a total of 2,316 undergraduates, master’s students, doctoral students and international students in theclass of 2023. At the commencement ceremony, the graduates dressed in academic gowns walked on the stage in an orderly manner. School leaders and mentor representatives presented graduation certificates for the graduates, turned their tassels, and took photos with them.
The graduates who will soon officially become medical workers made the solemn “Graduation Oath of a Medical Student”: “Health entrusted. Lives confided…I will do my utmost to alleviate human suffering and promote human health, safeguarding the sanctity and honor of medicine. I will heal the wounded and rescue the dying regardless of the trials and tribulations. As long as my life endures, may I commit myself to advance the nation's medical science and research as well as the well-being of the entire human race.”
Ding Kuiling, President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Jiang Fan, Deputy Party Secretary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Party Secretary of the School of Medicine presented the honorary trophies for “the Power of Role Models” students of Class 2023,the “University volunteers going west to serve” campaign and the 25th Graduate Students Volunteer Teaching Group of the Chinese Young Volunteers Association.
On behalf of SJTU School of Medicine, Party Secretary Jiang Fan andChancellor Fan Xianqun jointly accepted the gifts from graduates to their Alma mater. As representatives of graduate Party members, four students including Zhao Liudan, Zhang Junkai, Wang Nan and Wang Jieyi, presented their calligraphy works as a gift to their school. They will strive to be guardians of the lofty mission of "serving the country and the people", the defender of firm ideals and beliefs, the practitioner of superb medical skills, always bearing in mind the nurturing grace of their Alma mater, and writing a new chapter of SJTU School of Medicine.

Fan Xianqun, Chancellor of SJTUSM and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, gave all the graduates their last lesson with the topic of “Shouldering the responsibility ofthe Times to scale new heights in medicine”. To SJTUSM graduates about to embark on a new journey and make a difference in the new age, he offered the following message: “Responsibility” is the eternal theme of life. Responsibility is ability, spirit, and character.
Fan Xianqunexpects students tostay true to their original aspiration to study medicine and shoulder the responsibility of safeguarding life and health.The primary responsibility of a doctor is to use benevolent heart and skill to cure diseases and to save lives. “A noble man uses medical skills toimprove health and heal the world, thus called benevolence.” He hopes the graduates will use their extensive knowledge and superb skills to eliminate the pain of illness and save people in times of crisis. They ought to perform their duties and fulfill responsibilities as doctors, always having the patients’ interests at heart and realizing their own life value in the process of improving medical skills and saving lives. As doctors, they should never cease to improve themselves in profession and in humanistic quality, inheriting the skills and morality of great doctors.
Fan Xianqunexpects students to adhere to the spirit of innovation and shoulder the responsibility of promoting medical development. In today's world, with the new round of scientific revolution and fast industrial changes, the depth and breadth of medicine are constantly extending. Embarking on a new journey, he wishes students to join the new era of safeguarding people's lives and health and become outstanding medical innovators with an international vision and a holistic health concept. They are expected to take the responsibility of the Times and adhere to innovation, to find problems through clinical practice; to adhere to integrated development, to solve problems through interdisciplinary methods; to adhere to the principle of “Life-first”, to serve the people through the transformation of academic results. The road to medicine is long, full of bumpiness and thorns; Medical exploration requires wisdom and courage. Chancellor Fan hopes students can seize the opportunitydespite difficulties, shoulder the responsibility and fulfill their mission, forge ahead and create a better future together.
Fan Xianqunexpects the students to persist in making a difference and shoulder the responsibility of building a healthy China. Born at the right time,there’s more reason to work harder. The grand blueprint of a healthy China offers a broad stage to display talents and achieve dreams. He hopes the students will "learn from a wide range of views and progress with steady accumulation", and internalize the mission and responsibility of building a healthy China and ensuring people's full-cycle health in an all-round way in their hearts and externalize them in their actions. In order to shoulder the responsibility of building a strong nation, they must climb high on the peak of medicine, having the peoples’ best interests at heart and gather the strength to forge ahead. Only by devoting themselves to the great cause of "Healthy China" and continuously providing the people with a higher level and a wider range of health services can they resonate with the times, march alongside them and show their brilliance through hard work.

Teacher’s reminder: You might not be the brightest star, but you surely will shine.
The teacher is the one who can propagate the doctrine, impart professional knowledge, and resolve doubts.One cannot pursue knowledge without the tireless teachings from the teacher. Zhang Hao, President of the affiliated ShanghaiChildren’s Medical Center made a speech as a teacher’s representative. He recalled that after graduating from medical school in his hometown, he went to Beijing to study and live for 19 years,during which he witnessed the vigorous development and the heyday of congenital heart surgery in China. He said that after he came to Shanghai to work, he heard the story of Mr. Ding Wenxiang, the founder of the affiliated Shanghai Children's Medical Center. Mr. Ding came to Shanghai Aurora University from Su County of Anhui Province to study in his youth, then started his career at Ruijin Hospital. At the age of 45, he resolutely changed his profession to focus on pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, and established China's first pediatric cardiothoracic surgery specialty in Xinhua Hospital from scratch. At the age of 60, he promoted the establishment of a new modern children's hospital in Pudong. What drivesMr. Ding to jump out of one comfort zone and another is his strong sense of responsibility and mission for children with congenital heart disease. He has left behind a discipline, a hospital and a pediatric medicine culture that will be passed on forever.
Zhang Hao reminded every graduate that every failed operation will become a tombstone on your way to growth, and every conflict between doctors and patients or with colleagues will lead to slacking off and retreating. You need to constantly adjust yourself, to balance family and career, to balance your own desires and the harsh reality. Your personality can be as passionate as fire or as tranquil as water, but you must have enough courage to withstand the pressure and temper of life after leaving your comfort zone. What supports all this is the knowledge you acquired in SJTUSM, and the medical literacy and life wisdom given to you by the countless teachers through their words and actions. Zhang Hao firmly believes that in the future sky of Chinese medicine, you might not be the brightest star, but you will definitely shine.

Ding Luyue, a bachelor’s graduate of Class 2023 from the Clinical Medicine College of the affiliated Sixth People's Hospital, spoke as a graduate representative.
