From August 19 to 22 and from August 25 to 28, the finals of the B&R International Undergraduate Forum for Basic Innovative Experiment Design and the 9thNational Forum for Undergraduates on Innovative Research & Experimental Design in Basic Medicine were successfully held in Chongqing, which were sponsored by the Basic Medical Group of National Experimental Teaching Demonstrating Center Association, and organized by Chongqing Medical University and the Army Medical University of Chinese PLA. After internal preliminary trials and district semi-finals, the 8 representative teams from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM) underwent intense competitions in the finals, and eventually won 4 gold awards, 1 silver award, 3 bronze awards, and 3 individual awards, recording historic results in the event.

The National Forum for Undergraduates on Innovative Research & Experimental Design in Basic Medicine is one of the most extensive, influential, and high-level subject competitions in basic medicine in China. In recent years, the event has expanded in scale, and in 2023, it was officially included inthe Analysis Report of the Ministry of Education on the National College Student Competitions(ranking list), which drew much attention. Around the theme of advocating science, pursuing truth, and being innovative, this year’s forum focused on the construction of new medicine, by making sure that colleges and universities implement the student-centric educational concept that values the development of their abilities and qualities, as well as independent, original thinking and experimental skills. It was also designed to provide a platform where students could demonstrate their innovative spirit, capabilities, and comprehensive qualities across B&R countries.

At the opening ceremony of the forum on August 26, FAN Xianqun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and dean of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM), delivered an opening speech. He wished the forum a complete success, and made a special presentation titledPractice and Thinking of Medical Talent Development in the New Era, which received warm responses on the spot. CHENG Jinke, dean of College of Basic Medical Sciences, SJTUSM, shared his ideas by making a keynote speech titledThe Present and Future of Basic Medicine Education - A Review of the Development of Basic Medicine Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Compared to previous years, this year’s event reached a new level of scale, with more than 21,000 students coming from 235 Chinese universities and 9 foreign ones across 6 countries, who showcased their gorgeous talent in the unprecedentedly fierce competition. From January when it was initiated, the event drew a lot of attention from a large number of teachers and students. The College of Basic Medical Sciences worked with the School of Public Health, the School of Stomatology, the Student Affairs Office of the School of Medicine, and the Office of Student Innovation Program to successfully make the preparations. In May, by categories and groups, the internal teams and their works were registered. For the semi-finals and finals during the summer vacation, the College of Basic Medical Sciences organized student teams, directing teachers, and internal and external experts to simulate defense and drill for several times, so that they could repeatedly refine their works from the perspectives of project design, PPT production, defense skills, and team-working. On the day of the finals, the teams presented either offline or online, i.e., at the Chongqing venue or from the conference room of the College of Basic Medical Sciences. They were highly recognized by the experts, as they performed with a calm and composed demeanor, demonstrating the real style of SJTUSM students.

In particular, 57 teams from 60 universities in China, Russia, Belarus, Mongolia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan entered the finals of the 2023 B&R International Undergraduate Forum for Basic Innovative Experiment Design on August 19-22, and as one of the co-organizers, SJTUSM’s teachers and students did a lot of supporting jobs such as receiving the international friends and organizing the competition, which was highly praised by the organizing committee. During the forum, a symposium between Chinese and Russian universities was held, where in-depth exchanges were carried out between Voronezh State Medical University and Ulyanovsk University of the Russian Federation and our university on the vision of Sino-Russian partnership in education.

In addition, SJTUSM actively contributed to serving the event, and experts and scholars from different disciplines, including CHENG Jinke, WANG Hao, GU Mingmin, DING Zhide, HUANG Lei, and CHEN Guangjie from the School of Basic Medicine, participated in the evaluation of the semi-finals and finals as judges.

The report to the 20thNational Congress of the Communist Party of China proposes to adhere to educating people for the Party and the country, comprehensively improve the quality of independent talent training, and strive to cultivate top-notch innovative talents. High-quality medical talents are an important foundation and guarantee for building a healthy China. In recent years, the School of Medicine has focused on cultivating the scientific spirit and creativity of medical students, and building an innovation ability development system for medical students featuring the “dual subjects” of teachers and students, the “dual inspirations” of innovation topics and competitions, and the “dual guarantees” of innovation atmosphere and quality culture. The teachers are encouraged and supported in various ways to explore and practice in developing the abilities of medical students to innovate, effectively boosting the cultivation of outstanding medical talents.
