Professor Fan Xianqun was elected an academician of the AOI

In September 2022, Fan Xianqun, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Chancellor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and Professor of Ophthalmology of the Ninth People's Hospital, was elected as an academician of the International Academy of Ophthalmology (AOI). On June 14, 2023, ProfessorRichard Abbott, President of the International Academy of Ophthalmology and President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, awarded Professor Fan Xianqun with the medal and certificate of AOI academician at the International Academy of Ophthalmology academician conference held in Prague, Czech Republic.

In his inaugural speech, Professor Fan Xianqun told his own growth experience, introduced the long history and brilliant achievements of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and the Ninth Affiliated People's Hospital, and demonstrated the latest research achievements and diagnosis and treatment technologies of the ophthalmology team of the Ninth Affiliated Hospital in the field of ophthalmology and visual science.

Fan Xianqun stated that being elected as an academician of the International Academy of Ophthalmology not only fully recognizes his personal academic achievements, but also highly recognizes the professional development of Chinese ophthalmology, especially orbital diseases and eye tumors. Looking forward to the future, the International Academy of Ophthalmology is expected to further promote the development of ophthalmology and visual health in the world, help build a community of human health, and make new and greater contributions to the health and well-being of all mankind.

The International Academy of Ophthalmology was established in Belgium in 1975, mainly dedicated to providing the world's best ophthalmic education and basic research, as well as better medical services, in order to protect the vision of all humanity as an internationally renowned academic organization. The number of academicians of the International Academy of Ophthalmology is limited to 100 and is elected through nomination and voting. The basic requirements for nomination as an academician are to have been engaged in ophthalmology for at least 20 years and to publish at least 100 articles or monographs of various types. As of now, a total of 87 ophthalmologists from 33 countries have been elected as academicians of the International Academy of Ophthalmology worldwide.

Professor Fan Xianqun has been engaged in clinical and scientific research in ophthalmology for 35 years, specializing in the field of eye tumors and orbital diseases. He has developed new technologies for orbital surgery to improve the safety and effectiveness of the treatment of orbital diseases; Discovering new mechanisms of eye malignant tumors, creating new surgical treatment models, and improving the eye preservation and survival rates of eye tumors are the main pioneers in the field of eye tumors and orbital diseases in China. He has twice won the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Innovator Award of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, and the highest academic achievement award of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology as the first adult. He has served as the President of the Asia Pacific Society of Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery and the President of the Asia Pacific Society of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmology. Professor Fan Xianqun is an academician of the CAE, a member of the academic department of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmology, and a Fellowship Ad Hominem of the Royal College of Surgery in Edinburgh.
