On 30 March, Wang Xing, attending physician of thoracic surgery department of the First Affiliated People’s Hospital was invited to the online course of career planning and gave the lecture of “What Kind of Doctor Do You Want to Be?” for medical students of 2021.

Wang Xing, as the contracted author by Headline, has ever published Lung Talk, What Does the Cancer Patients Eat, Stranger Doctor’s Note and Family Member of the Patient, Please Come in, etc. The lecture begins with the question that why we should learn the history of medicine and gives the answer from three aspects of discipline integration, risk undertaking and comprehensive subject to point out the medicine is not isolated from other disciplines. Students can know the process of other disciplines being integrated into the medicine through learning the history of medicine. For example, the risk undertaking of hospital and doctor cannot be separately viewed that has been discussed when the modern hospital firstly appeared at the time of Republic of China (1929-1949). Learning the history of medicine can make students understand the historical facts.

On treatment of the disease or the people, Wang Xing holds that the doctor is not capable to ensure the patient can be incurred. Taking the critical patient as the example, it will be a great expense on being in hospital, and it is a dilemma that being in hospital is not necessarily incurred but if not, the patient just waits to die at home. As a doctor, we absolutely hope the patient can be survived, but we also need to consider the choice of people and respect the patient’s life willing and belief as well as economy condition. All the problems may cause medical litigation. He points out the medical litigation, not being specially reported by the media before, has always existed. Taking the opportunity, Wang Xing guides the students to ponder over whether the medical treatment belongs to service industry or not. Indeed, the medical treatment is related to service industry but not belonging to that. The initial purpose of medical treatment is to save patients’ life and maintain their health. The service is just a method.

Medical thinking is the core of the medical education, but not the medical skill. There are three stages in the process of medical learning: first is basic medicine and general education, second is bridge course and the last is knowledge and skill related to clinical medicine, from which the students should learn how to build their medical thinking. Medical thinking is critical thinking. Students can know how to resolve the problems by judging, master how to avoid the risk by doubting and understand how to become better by reflecting.

Being a doctor, besides hard working, should take on heavy responsibility. Wang Xing enhances interaction with students by asking questions to promote their thinking. For example, who does the doctor give an account to? Why does the doctor make a choice for the patient? The patient wants to choose the doctor by himself, so does the doctor want to ch

Finally, Wang Xing sends students several words: “I hope you understand the medical essence and still are the youth in several years”, “do more interesting things but meaningless, as majority of life would become meaningful and boring.”
