To the Mountains and Seas, Guided by Aspiration and Service

In 2021, upon completing his undergraduate studies in nursing at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Huang Hanjun journeyed upstream along the Yangtze River to Yibin, Sichuan, where he began a year of volunteer teaching service.

Over the course of that year, he brought experience and insights from the East to the West, advancing reforms in moral education and earning second prize in Sichuan Province’s “Lide Shuren” (Fostering Virtue through Education) Innovation Case Competition. He helped establish the first SJTU social practice base in Sichuan, along with a “Medical Enlightenment Cabin” for young learners. For three consecutive years, he mentored award-winning student innovation projects. In collaboration with the SJTU Sichuan Alumni Association, he helped set up the “Tianfu Siyuan Scholarship,” donating the entirety of his personal Rongchang Scholarship to support students in Western China in their academic pursuits.

Youth recognizes no distance too great. Responsibility defines the journey.Having grown alongside more than a thousand bright-eyed children, he reaffirmed his commitment to serving the nation's needs through concrete action.

Youth Is Walking Alongside Kindred Spirits

After returning to campus in 2022, Huang continued to take root in student affairs as a key student leader at SJTUSM, and the School of Nursing, contributing to moral education and the cultivation of medical humanism.

He witnessed six Nurse’s Day ceremonies, where mentors and professors shared the power of compassionate care and the promise of innovation in nursing. Within his Party branch, he worked closely with the committee to create flagship initiatives, expand hands-on learning opportunities, and pioneer new models of student engagement—efforts that led to the branch securing SJTU’s first “Gongxing Program”.

Twice, he joined SJTU’s physical training sessions, telling the story of the white coat meeting the uniform—how medical professionals serve with both heart and discipline. For six consecutive years, he volunteered at the China International Import Expo (CIIE), helping the signature “CIIE Red” shine on campus while supporting volunteers as they embraced the world.

He led the founding of the SJTUSM Youth Public Speaking Team and launched the “White Coat, Red Heart” theoretical lecture series. Across diverse settings, they delivered more than 100 medical-themed talks, reaching nearly 10,000 people. Under his leadership, the School of Nursing’s graduate team won second prize in the Shanghai “Zhixing Cup,” along with multiple individual awards and microlecture honors.

Through SJTU and SJTUSM platforms, he has continued to tell the story of nursing, share the spirit of healers, and support major events, demonstrating the vigor of nursing youth. His contributions helped SJTUSM’s Medical Student Union win national recognition, and he was honored to receive the inaugural Rongchang Medical Student Leadership Scholarship – Excellence Award.

Pursuing Knowledge, Climbing New Heights

During his postgraduate studies, he also delved deeply into nursing research. Drawing on his student practice experience, he focused on building cohesion in student organizations and developing student leadership pathways, completing two ideological and political research projects at the district and university levels.

Focusing on child and adolescent mental health, he participated in several dual-perspective parent-child mental health surveys in both Shanghai and Yibin. He explored regionally adapted models for psychological support in both eastern and western China, helping to develop a “teacher-student-parent” triadic mental health management system. He has published six papers in both Chinese and international journals and received honors such as third prize in the Shanghai “Zhixing Cup” and first prize in the Communist Youth League Research Competition.

“May youth meet the mountains and seas, fearless in the face of a thousand peaks." As he embarks on the next chapter of his journey, Huang extends heartfelt thanks to SJTUSM for its platform and to the mentors who have guided him. He will always carry the name and spirit of SJTU nursing with him, advancing forward in both clinical care and nursing research.
