Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM) is located in the center of Huangpu district, Shanghai, China, where the innovative spirit, diverse culture and inclusiveness are long-planted. The campus is surrounded by sycamore trees and houses time-honored red teaching buildings that are bathed in sunshine. The main campus of SJTUSM sits on South Chongqing Road. In November 2020, the SJTUSM Pudong campus started to break ground. Hence SJTUSM steps into a new era in which its development reaches from Puxi to Pudong, from Huangpu to Zhangjiang High-tech Park, and from Xintiandi to Shanghai International Medical Zone (SIMZ).

There are 16 key disciplines approved by the Ministry of Education. Basic medicine, clinical medicine, stomatology and pharmacy are listed as the national “double first-class” discipline. In the latest US News World University Rankings, 11 disciplines ranked top 100 in the world, 4 disciplines ranked first among Chinese universities, and 8 disciplines ranked top three among Chinese universities. In the 2021 ARWU Best Chinese Disciplines, SJTUSM ranked first for its clinical medicine, and ranked second for its basic medicine and stomatology. On the number of the National Natural Science Foundation projects, it has been ranked first among medical schools in China for 12 consecutive years. SJTUSM always leads China’s medical universities by its comprehensive strength of disciplines, and ranks first among academic research-oriented universities for three consecutive years in the classification evaluation of Shanghai higher education institutes. Facing the rapid changes in the era of science and technology and the development of life medicine, SJTUSM, guided by the “new medicine” strategy, insists on the “medicine + X” interdisciplinary development and closely aligns with the SJTU “big health” strategy. It further promotes the integration of clinical and basic medical sciences, accelerates the cross disciplinary development between medicine and arts, engineering, science and electronic information. SJTUSM has 1 National Facility for Translational Medicine, 2 national key laboratories, 1 national engineering research center, 1 national base for international science and technology cooperation, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education (MoE), 1 MoE engineering research center, 4 key laboratories of the National Health Commission and 25 Shanghai key laboratories, 8 Shanghai engineering technology research centers and 2 Shanghai engineering research centers. In recent years, SJTUSM has built a group of high-level scientific research platforms, including Shanghai Immune Therapy Institute, Shanghai Institute of Precision Medicine, Institute of Molecular Medicine and Shanghai Jiao Tong University-Edinburgh University One Health Center. It has created good momentum to gather world experts and deliver major scientific progresses.

SJTUSM has 12 affiliated hospitals, 7 of which are general hospitals and 5 are specialized hospitals. It has 3 national clinical medicine research centers, 1 National Children’s Medical Center, 1 National Stomatology Medical Center, 1 National Center for Tropical Diseases and 74 national key clinical specialties that account for 54% of the total number of national key clinical specialties in Shanghai.
