Institute of Molecular Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine
The Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM), Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was established in October 2017 under the leadership of professor Weihong Tan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. We are dedicated to advance molecular medicine focusing on innovative drug development. Our aim is to bridge the gap between basic research and clinical applications. The Institute covers a wide spectrum of research areas, shown below as a leading points.
Chemical biology
Chemical biology utilizes chemical and molecular tools to investigate biological systems and life processes. We work on concepts for innovative research into mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. Our research includes aptamers, molecular probes, molecular components, and biomimetic synthesis.
Nanomedicine
Nanomedicine involves the application of nanotechnology to comprehend life processes and mechanisms at microscopic scale. In IMM, we develop rapid medical diagnostic technologies and efficient treatment approaches.
Translational medicine
Translational medicine focuses on addressing clinical challenges by leveraging advancements in chemical biology, nanomedicine, and materials science for disease management.
Chemical metrology
Chemical metrology involves the analysis of the composition, distribution, structure, and properties of crucial target substances in biological samples. We identify major disease biomarkers and innovative technologies for precise disease diagnosis and treatment.
Materials science
Materials Science plays a pivotal role in molecular medicine by introducing novel materials that facilitate rapid and accurate disease diagnosis and treatment, offers new strategies for disease prevention and monitoring, and provide tools for safe and effective drug delivery.
IMM established co-operation with other units in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. We work with the Key Laboratory of Nucleic Acid Chemistry and Nanomedicine of Shanghai, the Molecular Medicine Research Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and six major platforms for research in wide understood omics, biological imaging, molecular synthesis, molecular diagnostics, chemical biology, and micro-nano processing. Currently, our funding exceeds ¥100 million yuan.
With a focus on nurturing young talents and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, the Institute currently comprises nearly 50 core members. We employ distinguished individuals, including members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Distinguished Young Scholars, National Outstanding Youth Scholars, overseas outstanding youth scholars, national overseas high-level talents, and Shanghai overseas high-level talents.
Since its inception, the Institute has secured 65 national-level research projects and 27 provincial-level projects, with a cumulative funding of over 200 million yuan. Additionally, it has filed for more than 60 national patents and published over 500 research papers in renowned journals like Nature, Science, and Nature Nanotechnology.
