Tong Ren Hospital

Shanghai Tongren Hospital, also known as Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Affiliated Tongren Hospital or Shanghai Tongren Red Cross Hospital, was established in 1866 and is one of the earliest Western hospitals since Shanghai's founding as a port. In 2013, Changning District Central Hospital merged with Changning District Tongren Hospital to form Shanghai Tongren Hospital, which was simultaneously listed as the Affiliated Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, achieving resource integration and brand revitalization.
The hospital is adjacent to the Hongqiao Comprehensive Transportation Hub and relies on a convenient three-dimensional transportation network, serving about 1.5 million people in Changning District and six surrounding districts. It radiates across the Yangtze River Delta and serves the entire country, serving as an important platform for emergency and critical care treatment within the region and international medical exchange and cooperation.
In 2013, Changning District Central Hospital merged with Changning District Tongren Hospital to form Shanghai Tongren Hospital, which was simultaneously listed as the Affiliated Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, achieving resource integration and brand revitalization. In 2025, the Changning District Maternal and Child Health Hospital, formerly Sun Keji Maternity Hospital founded in 1935, will be fully merged in, forming a new pattern of multi-campus coordinated development.
The hospital consists of the Xianxia Road Main Campus, Wuyi Road Branch, Hami Road Teaching Center, and Hongqiao International Medical Research Institute, covering a total area of 100 mu, with a building area of 180,000 square meters and an approved bed capacity of 1,350. By 2025, outpatient and emergency visits will reach 2.9 million, hospitalizations will reach 87,100, and surgeries will total 114,300. Currently, the hospital has a total of 2,855 employees, including 234 PhDs and 732 master's degrees, with 35.6% holding senior professional titles.
Currently, the hospital hosts research platforms including the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Hongqiao International Medical Research Institute, the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission Key Laboratory for Innovation and Transformation in Gastrointestinal Tumor Prevention and Treatment, the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Flexible Medical Robots, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Minimally Invasive Spine Research Center, and the National Drug Clinical Trial Institution. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, six key disciplines (specialized), one key supported discipline, and one key public health discipline were approved in Shanghai's health system. It has received over 100 national-level projects, with breakthroughs in key R&D programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China; Received one Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress and one Second Prize for Popularization of Science and Technology in Shanghai, and more than ten other medical science and technology awards; It boasts more than 30 provincial and ministerial-level or higher scientific and technological talents, including Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering, National Distinguished Young Scholars, Excellent Young Scholars (Overseas), Young Top Talents, Enlightenment Youth Program, Oriental Talents, and Magnolia Talents, ranking first among similar hospitals in Shanghai for seven consecutive years.
