Shanghai Tongren Hospital, also known as Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Affiliated Tongren Hospital and Shanghai Tongren Red Cross Hospital, was founded in 1866 and is one of the earliest Western hospitals in Shanghai since its opening to the outside world. Over the past century, adhering to the motto of "Unity and Dedication, Benevolence and Skill", it has always been committed to the development of medical science and the protection of people's health.Today, Tongren Hospital is a Grade B tertiary general hospital. Located in the Hongqiao area in the west of Shanghai, it consists of three parts: Xianxia Road Campus, Hami Road Teaching Center and Hongqiao International Medical Research Institute. It covers an area of 80 mu and has a building area of 130,000 square meters. It currently has over 2,100 employees and 1,200 beds. It receives over 2.3 million outpatients and emergency patients and admits nearly 70,000 inpatients annually. Tongren Hospital is a regional medical center construction unit in Shanghai, a pilot unit for establishing a modern hospital management system, and was selected as one of the first batch of high-quality development pilot units of public hospitals in the city in 2022. It has two key disciplines and six key specialties at the municipal level. It serves a population of 1.5 million in Changning District and the surrounding six districts, and undertakes the main tasks of treating critical, acute and severe diseases and preventing and controlling infectious diseases in the Hongqiao area. Since 2014, the hospital has relied on Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine to build the Hongqiao International Medical Research Institute, aiming to create a high-level scientific research platform and a translational medicine research center. In 2019, it established the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Gastrointestinal Tumor Prevention and Treatment Innovation and Transformation. In 2021, it was designated as a branch center of the Clinical Research Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and ranked first in the district-level public hospital scientific research competitiveness ranking for consecutive years. From 2021 to 2023, it has won 45 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 6 projects at or above the municipal and bureau level, published over 150 SCI papers annually, and won one second prize and five third prizes of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award, as well as one third prize of Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award.
