The Shanghai Institute of Virology
To align with Shanghai’s goal of becoming a global tech innovation center and a world - safe public health city, the Shanghai Institute of Virology (SHIV) was proposed by three Shanghai Jiao Tong University academicians: Lin Zhongqin, Ning Guang, and Fan Xianqun. It received strong support from then Shanghai Party Chief Li Qiang and was approved by the Shanghai municipal government. The Institute was inaugurated on September 26, 2022, at the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The Institute is guided by the principles of being “demand-driven, collaborative, open, and innovation-focused.” It harnesses the academic excellence of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, its medical school, and affiliated hospitals. The Institute integrates multidisciplinary expertise spanning virology-related fundamental research, clinical approaches to viral disease prevention and treatment, and collaborative endeavors on both domestic and international fronts. It is dedicated to advancing research in three key areas: Viruses evolution and cross-host transmission; Pathogenesis of viruses related emerging infectious diseases; Development of new strategies for prevention and treatment of viral infectious diseases. To fulfill its mission, the Institute is committed to building a diverse and highly skilled talent pool in the field of virology research. This includes recruiting top-tier international talents with a global perspective and pioneering novel approaches to youth talent development. By leveraging its robust academic reputation and cutting-edge technological infrastructure in virology research, the Institute aims to nurture a comprehensive research workforce spanning “fundamental research, clinical applications, translation, and industry engagement.” Furthermore, the Institute will maximize the potential of its forthcoming BSL-3 laboratory platform for non-human primate experiments, serving the nation and contributing to global virology research and core technological innovation.
Since its establishment, SHIV has gathered renowned researchers, including Chang Jiang Scholars, NSFC Distinguished Young Scholars, NSFC Excellent Young Scientists, and overseas high-level talents. In January 2025, it moved into a 13,700㎡experimental site adjacent to the Pudong campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The ultimate goal is to establish the Institute as a globally influential center for virology research, a bridge between clinical and foundational aspects of viral diseases research and translation, and a global hub for attracting and nurturing top talent in the field of virology research.
