College of Basic Medical Sciences

The College of Basic Medical Sciences traces its origins to the Basic Medical Department of Shanghai Second Medical College, established in August 1955. In May 1989, it was formally established as the College of Basic Medical Sciences of Shanghai Second Medical University. In 2005, following the merge of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Second Medical University, the College was incorporated into  Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and took on its current name as the College of Basic Medical Sciences. Today, it serves as an important base for medical education, scientific research and talent cultivation at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

The College has opened a new chapter in first-class discipline development and continues to advance frontier research in basic medical sciences. During the "15th Five-Year Plan" period, it will focus on four key disciplinary directions: Immunology and Cell Therapy, Stem Cells and Reproductive Development, Metabolic Homeostasis and Cell Fate, and Artificial Intelligence and Brain Science. In 2022, Basic Medical Sciences and Pharmacy were once again included in China’s national "Double First-Class" disciplines initiative, and were also designated as key disciplines under Shanghai's high-level local university construction program. In the fifth round of national discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, Basic Medical Sciences were ranked among the leading disciplines nationwide. In the 2025 Shanghai Best Chinese Subjects Ranking, the discipline ranked second in the country. In addition, Biology and Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Immunology, and Pharmacology and Toxicology have entered the global top 1‰ in ESI ranking, while Neuroscience and Behavior and Microbiology have entered the top 1% globally.
