Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is an internationally‑influential research‑driven and innovative institution integrating healthcare delivery, education, scientific research and social services. As an essential component of the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health closely responds to national strategies including the Healthy China Initiative and Digital China Initiative. Upholding the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, it cultivates versatile and outstanding innovative public‑health talents to address major public‑health challenges.Leveraging the strengths of the New Medical Science initiative and the in‑depth integration of medicine with engineering, natural sciences and humanities, the school has developed a development framework of “one core with multiple wings and multidisciplinary collaboration”. It has built a broad‑scope public‑health academic system featuring “integration of clinical care and disease prevention, linkage between macro‑ and micro‑level research, and convergence of population‑based and basic research”. It offers a multi‑level education system covering full‑time undergraduate programs, academic master’s programs, professional master’s programs, academic doctoral programs, professional doctoral programs and postdoctoral programs. A talent‑training model has been established that features problem‑oriented inquiry, research training, interdisciplinary integration, practical teaching and comprehensive assessment.
The school takes the lead in developing the Single‑Cell Omics and Disease Research Center and the Digital Medicine Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. It explores innovative interdisciplinary pathways bridging basic science, population studies, clinical practice, disease prevention and policy research, and brings together high‑caliber academic teams and international faculty members.
The school focuses on four major public‑health research priorities: public‑health security and emergency management, digital research on life‑course health, public‑health policy and governance, and global health and One Health. Centered on these key areas, it has built large interdisciplinary research and shared platforms, including the National Base for National Digital Literacy and Skills Training, Shanghai Vector‑borne Disease Prevention and Control Training Base, Digital Nutrition Center of the Shanghai Nutrition Innovation Platform, Food Safety and Toxicological Evaluation Center under the Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center for Translational Medicine, Shanghai Youth Science and Technology Innovation Education Base, Digital Public‑Health Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Digital Medicine Research Institute, Medical Science Popularization and Communication Sub‑center, and the Public‑Health Emergency Medicine Training Base jointly built with Ruijin Hospital. These platforms provide robust support for high‑level original research and translational applications.
Departments under the school include Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Food Hygiene and Nutrition, Environmental Health, Maternal and Child Health, Community Health and Behavioral Medicine, and Social Medicine and Health Service Management. It also hosts interdisciplinary research platforms: the Early‑Life Health Research Center, Active Health and Evidence‑based Decision‑making Research Center, Smart Health Research Center, Medical Science Popularization and Health Communication Research Center, and the Health Technology Assessment Institute.The school holds first‑level doctoral and master’s degree authorization in Public Health and Preventive Medicine. It offers Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) professional degrees. Its undergraduate program has been selected as a national‑level first‑class undergraduate major construction site, forming a coherent talent‑training system spanning undergraduate, master’s, academic doctoral and professional doctoral levels.
