The school focuses on four major public health research areas: public health safety and emergency management, digital full lifecycle health research, public health policy and management, and global health and one health. It has established several multidisciplinary collaborative research platforms, including the National Digital Literacy and Skills Training Base, Shanghai Vector Biology Prevention and Control Training Base, Shanghai Nutrition Innovation Platform Digital Nutrition Center, Shanghai Translational Medicine Collaborative Innovation Center - Food Safety and Toxicology Evaluation Center, Shanghai Student (Youth) Science and Technology Innovation Education Base, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Digital Medicine Research Institute Digital Public Health Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Medical Science Popularization Education Converged Media Sub-center, and a Public Health Emergency Medical Training Base in collaboration with Ruijin Hospital.

The school comprises departments such as Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Nutrition and Food Safety, Environmental and Health, Women's and Children's Health, Community Health and Behavioral Medicine, and Social Medicine and Health Services Management. It houses interdisciplinary research platforms like the Early Life Health Research Center, Active Health and Evidence-Based Decision Research Center, Smart Health Research Center, Medical Science Popularization and Health Communication Research Center, and Health Technology Assessment Institute. It holds doctoral and master's degree authorization points in Public Health and Preventive Medicine and a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree authorization point.
