Double-stranded DNA normally exists in the right-handed Watson-Crick B-form. The structure of Z-form DNA has a left-handed conformation, and was revealed by Alexander Rich in 1979. Double-stranded RNA can also adopt  a Z-form. This unusual Z-form could be a hallmark of non-self nucleic acid to induce the immune response. The immunostimulatory potential of Z-nucleic acid was reported initially from 2017. It could be generated by viral infections or of endogenous origin.

However,  the nature and biological function of them awaits further investigation. We thus to explore the origination and the biological function of this unique conformation in both pathogen invasions and sterile inflammation.

Apart from Z-nucleic acid, we will also try the possibility of the application of stem-cell technology into anti-tumor therapy.
