Medical experts from Shanghai and Italy shared experiences in treating novel coronavirus disease during an online session held by Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine on Monday.

The school is to have similar meetings with France, America and countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative on disease prevention and control.

Fan Xianqun, the school's Party secretary, said China and Italy are both being challenged by the disease. As conditions in China improve, domestic experts were keen to share their experiences with their Italian counterparts.

Roberto Pagani, science and technology counsellor at the Consulate General of Italy in Shanghai, thanked China for its support and talked about the pandemic’s effect in his country.

Qu Jieming, chief physician of respiratory medicine at Ruijin Hospital, talked about diagnosis and treatment in China.

Gao Yuan, director of Renji Hospital’s intensive care unit, and Xu Yan, nurse supervisor at Ruijin Hospital's ICU, outlined some key points in the treatment of severe and critical patients.

Zheng Junhua, vice president of Shanghai General Hospital, reported on the analysis of risk factors associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome and deaths in Wuhan.

The Italian experts asked about the use of equipment such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in treatment, the choice of drugs in antiviral therapy, the risk of death in elderly people, protective measures taken by medical workers and medicine used on pregnant women during a Q&A session.
