Introduction of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Nursing

Established in 1985, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) School of Nursing is one of the firsts to run undergraduate nursing education in China (known as the Advanced Nursing Department of Shanghai Second Medical University before 2005). The School of Nursing started the graduate program leading to a Master of Science in Nursing in 2003. In 2010, the School became one of the few firsts that offer professional nursing degree in China. The School is also among the firsts that were authorized to offer doctoral degree in nursing in 2011. Nursing is one of the key disciplines in SJTU. Apart from enjoying the first-class teaching and research strength of SJTU, SJTUSM and rich clinical medical resources of 12 affiliated hospitals, the School of Nursing has also received tremendous national, municipal, and university support, including the project of Shanghai Educational Highlands in 2006, the project of Featured Specialties in National Universities in 2009, the project of National Key Clinical Specialties in 2011, the Post-Doctoral Project of Nursing Faculties in 2014, the Shanghai Plateau Disciplines in 2015, and the Incentive Plan for Backbone Faculties. With this support, the School of Nursing is growing fast with clear goals, strong specialties, excellent faculties, and remarkable achievements. The School of Nursing has made huge progress towards becoming a nationally and internationally renowned nursing school. According to the fourth round of discipline evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2016, Nursing ranked B+ (No. 6), which proved its competitiveness and strength. In April 2020, it was approved as the development project of Shanghai Public Health Emergency Disposal Nursing Reserve Team. In 2020, Nursing specialty was selected as one of the national first-class undergraduate majors, and in 2022, SJTU Nursing discipline ranked A+ in the Times Higher Education World Class China Academic Ranking for Nursing. In 2022, the School began to run Nursing + Administration Dual Degree Program.

The SJTU School of Nursing has 85 full-time and part-time faculties, 35 graduate supervisors (including 9 doctoral supervisors), 3 post-doctoral collaborative supervisors, 6 high-end talents recruited in a flexible way, and 4 foreign visiting professors. Through the mechanism of a mutually recognized credit and schooling system, 44% of our students have regular exchanges and research collaborations (ranging 1-5 months) with international scholars. Those scholars come from 20 internationally renowned universities in 10 countries, such as the United States, Australia, France, and Sweden. Currently, 92% of the full-time faculties have doctorates, 24% of doctorates obtained from abroad. The school initiated the China-Australia Nursing "3.5+2" Accelerated Program and the "2+2" Dual Undergraduate Degree Project. This initiation offered a new mechanism for international collaboration, which has increased our international impact on advancing nursing education.

In the past two years, the School has obtained 6 national fund projects, and gained support from a series of major projects such as Nursing Discipline Talent Development Project of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, “Nursing Reserve Team” Construction Program of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine for Public Health Emergency Response, High-level Local University Construction Project of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (Phase II) - Nursing, and Shanghai High-level Local University Innovation Team of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (Phase II) - Nursing. Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Shanghai High Level Local University Innovation Team (Phase II) - Nursing and a series of major projects, with an accumulative funding of more than 120 million Yuan. The School has published 15 monographs (including the "14th Five-Year Plan" text books supported by the National Health Commission and 2 textbooks of national higher education institutions), over 100 representative papers in important journals at home and abroad, and 15 international joint papers. Additionally, a series of policies and initiatives have been issued, such as Opinions on Accelerating the Construction and Development of Nursing Discipline, Judging Methods of "Jiulong Nursing Excellent Young Talents Award", and Rules for Classifying and Guiding the Selection and Recruitment of Postgraduate Tutors in Nursing Discipline of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. With Shanghai Nursing Society the School jointly sponsored the Shanghai International School of Stomatological Therapists which has trained over 300 stomatological therapists across China, and the therapists successfully obtained the International Certificate of Stomatological Therapists. So far, 28 training centers have been established at the municipal level or above to train future nurse specialists in stomatology, and the nurse specialists in our school have opened 18 out-patient clinics.

Keeping pace with the nursing development around the globe, the SJTU School of Nursing has invested large efforts in nursing education. The School has started innovative teaching methods including "online", "offline", "virtual simulation", "online + offline" hybrid teaching. These efforts have cultivated many nurse faculties who are innovative, visionary, responsible, and passionate in nursing education and research.
