Biography

Dr. Shengzhong Duan, Distinguished Professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Dr. Duan received his Bachelor of Clinical Medicine and Master of Medicine (Biochemistry) from Hubei Medical University (now Wuhan University School of Medicine), received his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Michigan, and finished his postdoctoral training in departments of Molecular & Integrative Physiology and Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. From 2010 to 2016, he worked as a Professor and Principal Investigator at the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. From July 2016 to now, he is a Professor and Principal Investigator at the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine; College of Stomatology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Dr. Duan’s major research interest is to study the roles of oral/gut microbiota and host immune response in metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. His research group has focused on the following areas in recent years: 1) The function of oral and gut microbiota in associations between periodontitis and comorbidities, particularly cardiovascular diseases and metabolic diseases; 2) Host-microorganism interactions in cardiovascular diseases and metabolic diseases; 3) Transcriptional and immunological regulations in cardiovascular diseases and metabolic diseases. He has been funded by the One Hundred Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, as well as Major Program, Major Research Plan, and General Program from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. His representative work has been published in journals such as Nat Immunol, J Clin Invest, Circ Res, Hepatology, Cell Res, EMBO Mol Med, Cell Death Differ, and J Adv Res.
