History

Shanghai Jiao Tong University College of Stomatology, formerly known as Dental School of Aurora University, was founded in 1932. The college enjoys a remarkable history of 90 years. It was first established by Le goaer, a French dentist doctor, in 1932. Located in the former Guangci hospital (now Ruijin Hospital), it is one of the earliest dental schools in China. In 1940, Shen Guozuo was appointed as the first Chinese Dean of the Dental School.

In 1952, St. John's University School of Medicine, Tongde Medical College and Aurora University School of Medicine were merged to set up Shanghai Second Medical College, and the Faculty of Dentistry was renamed as the Faculty of Stomatology of Shanghai Second Medical College. Professor Xi Yingzhong was appointed as Dean of Faculty of Stomatology. In 1953, when the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Ward was founded by Professor Zhang Xize, the “Chinese Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery” was merely sprouting.

The mid 1950s witnessed the expansion of the Faculty of Stomatology. Outstanding talents from well-known domestic stomatological schools made all contributions to the newly built Faculty of Stomatology of Shanghai Second Medical College. Stomatological subdisciplines sprung up like mushrooms during that period.

In December 1965, the Faculty of Stomatology moved from the headquarters of Shanghai Second Medical College and Guangci hospital to Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital. Stomatology has been further developed, Oral Materials Science led by Professor Qiu Lichong, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery led by Professor Zhang Disheng and Professor Zhang Xize, Oral Mucosal Diseases led by Professor Xu Guoqi and Microbiology of Dental Caries led by Professor Wu Aiju and Professor Shao Jiajue developed vigorously. In 1979, Professor Zhang Xize became the new Dean of Faculty of Stomatology Shanghai Second Medical College. In the same year, the Faculty of Stomatology was approved to be one of the nation’s first Doctorate and Master Degrees Awarding Units.

In October 1987, the Faculty of Stomatology of Shanghai Second Medical College was rebranded as Shanghai Second Medical University College of Stomatology. In July 2005, Shanghai Second Medical University merged with Shanghai Jiao Tong University; In October, Shanghai Second Medical University College of Stomatology was renamed as Shanghai Jiao Tong University College of Stomatology. Stomatological disciplines then entered the stage of leap-forward development. Under the leadership of a batch of academic leaders and lifelong professors, such as Academician Qiu Weiliu, Academician Zhang Zhiyuan, Professor Liu Zheng, Professor Xue Miao, Professor Zhou Zengtong and Professor Zhang Fuqiang, a large number of national talents were gathered, pushing forward the leapfrog development of scientific research, talent training, social service and others.

The College of Stomatology was one of the advanced training bases of the Ministry of Health in the early 1980s. The college features a sound teaching system, state-of-the-art teaching facilities and methods, and a high-caliber faculty. It was among the first batch of characteristic specialty construction sites of higher learning institutions by the Ministry of Education in 2007. In 2006, Stomatology won the title of Shanghai high-level characteristic construction project. In 2008, it was recognized with the third phase construction project of Shanghai undergraduate teaching highland.

At the end of 2019, as a secondary college, the College of Stomatology reformed its organizational system to further promote the construction of the Stomatology Discipline of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Now, on the moment of the 90th birthday of Stomatology, the disciplines will start to flourish on a new journey.
