Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine 70th Anniversary Series Events - The 2nd Symposium on “Immunobiology in the 21st Century” Held Successfully

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and the 3rd anniversary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine - Yale University Institute for Immune Metabolism, the 2nd Symposium on “Immunobiology in the 21st Century”, hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine - Yale University Institute for Immune Metabolism, Shanghai Institute of Immunology and Ruijin Hospital, was held online successfully on 18-20 April 2022.

At the opening ceremony on 18 April, president and academician Xuetao Cao of Nankai University, dean and academician Chen Dong of Shanghai Institute of Immunotherapy Innovation, Richard Flavell, Sterling Professor of Yale University School of Medicine, HHMI senior researcher and academician of the National Academy of Sciences, Zhigang Tian, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, supervisor of Chinese Society of Immunology, director of Institute of Immunology of University of Science and Technology of China, Bing Su, director of Shanghai Institute of Immunology, dean of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine - Yale University Institute for Immune Metabolism, Yuzhang Wu, president of the Chinese Society of Immunology and director of the Institute of Immunology of Army Medical University, Zhijian Chen, academician of the National Academy of Sciences, HHMI senior researcher and chair professor of Southwest Medical Center, and over 30 famous immunologists from domestic research institutes attended.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Huabing Li, PI of Shanghai Institute of Immunology and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Professor Bing Su, director of Shanghai Institute of Immunology delivered the welcome speech as chairman of the conference. First of all he appreciated all the experts who could overcome difficulties and participate in this symposium to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Bing Su expressed appreciation to friends from all over the country for their concern and support to Shanghai, and expected more scientific exchanges and mutual visits in person after the pandemic. He pointed out that the field of immunology research at home and abroad in recent years developed rapidly, but many mysteries still remained, especially under the circumstance of pandemic. He wished a profound discussion from a scientific perspective and further improvement in the field of immunology and other cross fusion to deepen the understanding of tumor immunity, metabolic immunity and infection immunity, expand the influence of domestic immunology in the world, and promote basic and translational research in immunology for a better service of human health.

Professor Richard Flavell of Yale University sent congratulation on the 70th anniversary of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and the opening of the 2nd Symposium on “Immunobiology in the 21st Century”. He expressed his great honor to participate in the academic exchange and cooperation of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine - Yale University Institute for Immune Metabolism, which was established jointly by Yale University and SJTUSM. In spite of the absence in campus, he was happy to be online with experts and scholars from all over the world together. He highlighted that China possessed a group of top immunologists and has become an important research force in the field of immunology globally. He believed that this online symposium would provide a more convenient chance for researchers at home and abroad to share the most cutting-edge scientific progress and contribute the wisdom to the scientific community when facing the new challenges and opportunities.

Professor Xianqun Fan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, vice president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and dean of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, expressed his sincere greetings and appreciation to all the experts and scholars presented online. Professor Fan mentioned that Shanghai was in a critical period of pandemic prevention and control, SJTUSM and its affiliated Hospital have always made great effort to protect the health of teachers, students and medical staffs, and brought the strongest medical strength together to fight for the prevention and control of pandemic in Shanghai. He pointed out that Shanghai Institute of Immunology received many pioneering achievements and published a series of high-level scientific research papers in recent years, which has made important contributions to the development of immunology in the School of Medicine. In order to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, the School will enhance the development and progress of the immunology discipline by inviting immunology experts globally to discuss the latest progress in the field online and pool the wisdom and consensus together. In conclusion, professor Fan wished the symposium a great success.

This symposium invited 3 world's top immunologists as Keynote Speakers, including professor Zhijian Chen of Southwestern Medical Center, professor Michael Karin of UCSD, and professor Richard Flavell of Yale University, as well as 35 special guest speakers and well-known experts from top universities and research institutes including academician Xuetao Cao of Nankai University, academician Zhigang Tian of the University of Science and Technology of China, academician Chen Dong of Shanghai Institute of Immunotherapy Innovation, president Yuzhang Wu of the Chinese Society of Immunology. The speakers communicated with teachers and students online about the latest progress in five hot frontier fields: immunology and human health, adaptive immunity, tumor immunity, infection and inflammation, and translational medicine, mainly including cGAS, hnRNAPa2b1, EPO, mTOR, IL-27, IgG1, VEGFR3, MVAS, TCR, INFLAMmasome, RNA modification and other major signal recognition receptors and signaling pathways, as well as regulation and function; function and regulation of NK cells, Tfh cells, CD4+ T cells, B cells, tissue resident macrophages, ILC2 cells, MDSC cells, tumor killer T cells, Treg cells and other main immune cell subtypes; psoriasis, inflammation, pulmonary fibrosis, liver cancer, viral infection, COVID-19, transplant rejection, CAR-T optimization, tumor immunotherapy and other immunological problems closely related to major human diseases, providing a high-level academic feast for teachers and students. The three-day online symposium was highly recognized and enthusiastically participated by the experts and attracted nearly 80,000 online viewers. The success of the symposium was also a gift to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
