Adhering to the motto of “Exploring medical science to the limits through diligence and dedication”, the graduate education of the College of Basic Medical Sciences is committed to cultivating high-level talents with broad and solid knowledge of basic medicine and life science, with excellent scientific research literacy and innovative ability.

The College owns strong disciplines and outstanding talents. Currently, basic medicine and pharmacy are two national "Double First-Class" disciplines, which are also plateau disciplines in the list of Shanghai universities, containing a group of high-level international research teams composed by Principle Investigators (PIs), including 80 doctoral supervisors and 46 master supervisors. In terms of discipline bases, the College has leading research centers and laboratories, including International Technology Cooperation Base: Shanghai International Joint Research Center for Translational Medicine, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Cell Differentiation and Apoptosis of the Ministry of Education, biomedical clinical research and transformation collaborative innovation center established jointly by provincial department, Shanghai Institute of Immunology, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Tumor Microenvironment and Inflammation, and Advanced Research Base of Cell Homeostasis and Disease.

At present, the College enrolls around 70 masters and 70 doctoral students every year based on basic medicine and pharmacy disciplines. The graduates are cultivated and trained in 7 major departments: Department of Pathology, Department of Pathophysiology, Department of Histoembryology, Genetics and Developmental Biology (DHGDB), Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology, Shanghai Institute of Immunology & Department of Immunology and Microbiology, Department of Anatomy and Physiology, Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology. In the training process, the graduate laboratory rotation system (two-way tutors designation), the selection system of master to doctoral degree, the graduate thesis steering committee system, Zhiyuan “direct doctoral students” honor program and other systems are implemented to innovate the training mode and improve the quality. The College’s scientific research and cultural environment provide a series of academic exchanges, cultural seminars, overseas study tours, scholarships and other activities and funding.

The College has strengthened international exchanges and cooperation to enhance its international academic status and influence. Various programs and research centers has been established such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine - Yale University Institute for Immune Metabolism, Global Health Research Center in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, joint Ph.D degree program between SJTU-SM and HUJI-MED, so as to realize a new model of international talent training, and form a basic medical research and teaching base for the world.
