The College of Basic Medical Sciences of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was founded in 1955 by the convergence of the basic medicine strength of the former St. John's University School of Medicine, Aurora University School of Medicine and Tongde School of Medicine. Through 70 years of construction and development, the college has been constantly reforming with determination, striving to promote the cultural construction under the guidance of pursuing excellence and seeking substantial outcomes, create vigorous and professional academic ambience and great environment for cultivating innovative talents. The college has gathered a group of influential high-level teaching staff at home and abroad, including 1 academician, 95 full professors, 75 research groups, 17 international consultant professors and 55 visiting professors.

Academic Strength


The College has constructed 6 frontier research centers, and cooperated extensively with affiliated hospitals to build 4 Basic-Clinical research centers based on national key laboratories and international cooperation centers, focusing on major research fields such as tumor, infection and immunity, cell metabolism regulation, brain science and precision medicine, etc. In the past five years, the college has undertaken 115 national key projects and 351 regular projects. The average impact factor of published journals raised from 5.29 in 2016 to 8.52 in 2020. In particular, 6 papers were published in high-impact academic journals such as Nature, Science and Cell, and national awards like second prize of National Natural Science Award and the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award have been attained.

Talent Cultivation


The College comprehensively carried out the curriculum reform of organ system integration and has won the first prize of National Teaching Achievement Award based on the fundamental mission of educating talents through virtue and train objective of cultivating students into excellent medical innovative talents with creative thinking, international vision, lofty ideals and potential leadership capability. In 2016, Biomedical Science undergraduate program has been established, drawing on the innovative talent training mode and system mechanism of world-class universities, aiming to cultivate a group of leading talents in the field of medical research and education with profound mathematical, physical and chemical skills and modern life science vision, as well as comprehensive medical knowledge. More than 90% of the graduates continued their studies in top universities and research institutes domestically and internationally, both received great feedback.

International Impact


The discipline of Basic Medicine in the College is considered to be one of the fastest development and best basic medicine disciplines in China. Based on the database analysis of SciVal, it ranks the first in terms of the scientific research strength at home. Immunology, Biology and Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Genetics ranked the top 1% of ESI, among which Biology and Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology ranked the top 1‰. The College is the only member of the Steering Committee of the International Association of Academic Health Centers in China, and fully integrated into the international research network, such as co-establishment of Immune Metabolism Research Institute with Yale University, joint construction of Immune Regulation Center with Centre d'Immunologie de Marseille-Luminy (CIML), dual doctoral degree programs cooperation with Hebrew University of Israel, etc., so as to achieve the new mode of international talent training and create a basic medical research and teaching base that serves the world. The College has held high-level international conferences and forums annually, for instance, International Conference on SUMO, Ubiquitin, UBL Proteins: Implication for Human Diseases, SJTUSM-Yale Joint Summit Academic Forum, SJTUSM-Hadassah Bilateral Symposium, etc., inviting world-renowned Nobel Prize winners and academicians of National Academy of Sciences to give excellent talks, sharing the latest cutting-edge research achievements with the global scientific community and highlighting the responsibility and accountability of the discipline serving basic medicine innovative development.
