Shanghai Key Laboratory for Prevention and Treatment of Bone and Joint Disease affiliated to Shanghai Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics(SITO) in Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. SITO was established in 1958, in which set up the earliest specialist laboratory of basic orthopaedic research in China in the early 1980s. This laboratory was awarded as Shanghai Key Laboratory for Prevention and Treatment of Bone and Joint Disease in 1997 by Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, and certified in 1999. Over 20 years, the key laboratory has been developed to a professional laboratory with reasonable talent echelon, stable research direction and complete technical system, and continuously rated as "good level" by experts from the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality. It has become a well-known scientific research institution and base worldwide.Sticking to the development concept of integration of traditional Chinese and western medicine, the key laboratory focuses on four main research directions: 1) To elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of skeletal development, injury and degenerative disease of bone and joint, and identify potential therapeutic targets for developing new drugs against bone & joint diseases and injury. 2)Inheritance, development and modernization of Wei's traditional Traumatology, which aim to establish the theoretical system of Wei's traumatology and expand the clinical application of Wei's traumatic prescriptions; 3) Repair and reconstruction of bone and joint, which aim to understand deeply the biological events involved in the process of bone and joint repair, and develope novel biomaterials for bone & joint repair and regeneration; 4) Digital medicine and advanced smart manufacturing, which aim to study the kinematics and dynamics of bone and joints, and propose strategies for individualized treatment using 3D printing techniques. The laboratory covers an area of more than 3,000 square meters and is well-equipped with tissue morphology, imaging, cellular and molecular biology, drug screening, biomechanics, regenerative medicine and other basic research equipment. In recent five years, 16 people in the Key Laboratory have been selected into the talent programs, including "National Program for High-level Overseas Young Talents", and "Shanghai Overseas High-Level Talent Recruitment Programs". 20 post-doctor,23 postgraduate students, as well as 78 domestic and foreign joint post-doctoral and post-graduate students, have been trained in the key laboratory. The team in the key laboratory received 118 national and regional grants, more than 52 million yuan. Meanwhile, 115 scientific papers have been published in top academic journals, including Nat Commun, Cell Death Differ, Adv Mater, Adv Funct Mater, Adv Sci, J Bone Miner Res, Biomater, etc. Also, the Key Laboratory has won 6 Science and Technology Achievement Awards from the Shanghai government and the National Ministry of Health, respectively. 4 national patents have been transformed and applied, and more than 2000 specimens were tested annually from domestic and abroad. The laboratory was awarded the "Best Development Team" by Ruijin Hospital.
