An overseas training program for administrative staff was recently launched at SJTUSM for further developing the administrative team’s global perspectives and managerial capacity. On the evening of February 1, 2026, two selected senior admin staff Ms. Lei Yu and Ms. Sun Yuexia arrived in Singapore to begin a three-month tour study. During their first week, they had a packed schedule and visited several institutions in Singapore.

Visit to SJTU Asia-Pacific Graduate Institute

SJTU Asia-Pacific Graduate Institute is their first stop on February 5. As the only independently operated institute established by a Chinese university in Singapore, the Institute has developed nine specialized centers, including the Antai Asia-Pacific Center, the AI-Translational Medicine Singapore Center, and the Southeast Asia Center of the Sino-UK International Low Carbon College. Together, these centers form an international platform spanning business and management, medical-engineering integration, low-carbon and environmental sustainability, and technology transfer. The institute has become a core vehicle for China-Singapore cooperation in education and technology, having trained more than 800 internationally oriented professionals and significantly enhancing SJTU’s global reputation and brand recognition. Peng Yinghong, Dean of SJTU Asia-Pacific Graduate Institute, and Xu Min, Associate Dean, attended the meeting.

The two visiting scholars had in detailed discussions on the possibility of establishing and operating an overseas center for SJTUSM through SJTU Asia-Pacific Graduate Institute. Together they explored the center’s strategic positioning, functional modules, operational framework, and implementation pathway.

They also discussed how SJTUSM could leverage support from the Singapore government and the National University of Singapore to advance talent training, scientific collaboration, resource integration, and disciplinary development. Emphasis was placed on identifying market opportunities, capitalizing on institutional strengths, and developing a distinctive “SJTU Medicine model” for international expansion.

Visit to Singapore Management University (SMU)

On the morning of February 6, Yu Chaoyang, Member of the Standing Committee of the SJTU Council Chair and Director of Communication, led a university delegation to visit Singapore Management University (SMU). Ms. Lei and Ms. Sun joined the delegation.

The visit focused on SMU’s best practices in campus planning, spatial design, teaching innovation, community engagement, green campus development, and sustainability. The delegation toured SMU’s second- and third-generation campus buildings and systematically studied its advanced concepts in campus design, teaching space planning, sustainable operations, and integration with the surrounding urban community.

SMU’s overarching philosophy “space serves teaching, architecture integrates with nature, and campus connects with community” offered valuable insights for SJTUSM’s campus design and internationalization strategy.

On the afternoon of February 6, the delegation visited the Antai Asia-Pacific Center, which operates under SJTU Asia-Pacific Graduate Institute. Based in Singapore, the Center focuses on Asia-Pacific business practice and is committed to cultivating globally minded leaders. Its SJTU ASEAN MBA program has become one of the world’s leading Chinese-language MBA programs. Xi Junfang, Chief Representative of the Antai Asia-Pacific Center, attended the meeting.

The visiting scholars gained detailed insights into the Center’s overseas operational experience, market strategy, management model, and challenges. They sought guidance on partnership structures and implementation pathways for establishing an overseas center for SJTUSM. Building on Antai’s successful experience, both sides conducted pragmatic discussions on the proposed overseas center’s core functional modules, operational mechanisms, cooperation models, and preliminary planning proposals.

Cross-Industry Learning: Visit to Baosteel Shipping (Singapore)

On February 3, they visited Baosteel Shipping Co., Ltd. (Singapore) to learn how strategic geographic advantages can be transformed into core competitiveness, and to observe international team collaboration and cross-cultural management practices. General Manager Tao Liang warmly received the delegation and introduced how the company leverages Singapore’s unique position as the “global heart of shipping” to integrate global route networks and strengthen overseas ocean-shipping capacity, advancing the implementation of “national cargo carried by national shipping” solution.

This cross-sector visit broadened the delegation’s managerial horizons. Throughout the remainder of the program, the team will continue to adopt an open and learning-oriented mindset, drawing inspiration from advanced management practices across industries to enhance the modernization and internationalization of SJTUSM’s governance system, and to better support the high-quality development of medical education and research.

To ensure precise alignment with institutional needs and to pragmatically advance overseas collaboration initiatives, the delegation also had multiple online meetings this week with the Office of Academic Affairs, Graduate School, Office of International Affairs, Hospital Administration Office, School of Continuing Education, College of Basic Medical Sciences, and School of Nursing. These discussions focused on identifying specific demands and exploring concrete opportunities for international cooperation.
