With the steady progress of developing a world-class university and first-rate disciplines, SJTUSM has continued to expand collaboration with world-renowned medical schools. Together with our global partners, we explored new forms of exchanges and collaboration, including short-term student exchanges, graduate student joint training, collaborative research, bilateral academic seminars, and training of teachers, and have gradually formed featured programs such as Sino-French joint medical education, Shanghai-Ottawa Joint Medical School, and overseas study tours for students.
The school began to admit foreign students in 1967 and established inter-collegiate relations with 64 schools from 21 countries in the world. It trained the students to become talented medical personal and promoted the development of school in all aspects. The International Students Office (Foreign Students Office) is under the leadership of the school authorities responsible for admission and administration for international students.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM) is located in the heart of Huangpu district, Shanghai, China, where the innovative spirit, diverse culture and inclusiveness are long-planted. SJTUSM is formerly known as Shanghai Second Medical University, which was established in 1952 during the nationwide reorganization of higher education. It was formed through the merger of St. John’s University School of Medicine (1896-1952), Aurora University School of Medicine (1912-1952), and Tongde Medical College (1918-1952) in 1952. In 1985, it was officially renamed Shanghai Second Medical University.In 1997, the university was selected as part of China’s “Project 211” initiative. In July 2005, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Second Medical University merged to establish the SJTUSM, which is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal Government, and was included in the national “Project 985” initiative.
