Research Areas: Early life environmental exposures and offspring health

Biography

Dr. Gao obtained a Bachelor's degree of Maternity and child care from Peking University Health Science Center and Doctorate in Pediatrics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Dr. Gao focuses on how exposures that occur during critical and vulnerable periods of development may influence offspring’ health outcomes based on birth cohort studies. Her research work involves applying epidemiology, risk analysis, and toxicology to provide a comprehensive understanding of the risk and mechanism of environmental endocrine disruptors, not only traditional contaminants such as organophosphate or pyrethroid pesticides, and brominated flame retardants, but also emerging environmental contaminants such as perfluoroalkyl substances, personal care products, bisphenol A and organophosphorus flame retardants. She is responsible for building and maintaining Laizhou Wai Birth Cohort. She is also interested in epidemiologic methodology research and statistical models that could help us better address biases in observational studies, and explore the mixed effects of traditional and emerging environmental contaminants. Dr. Gao is leading several studies with funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and The Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality to evaluate whether fetal exposures to endocrine disrupting compounds could harm fetal growth and development leading to adverse health effects such as impaired neuropsychological function, obesity and disrupted reproductive function in childhood. She has published more than 50 papers in the field of influential magazines such as Environ Health Perspect, Environ Int, Environ Sci Technol, and Environ Res.
